Historia
Since her death, people have got Jane Austen wrong. The real Jane - revealed for the first time in this landmark biography - was a less cosy, more spiky, more modern figure than she is usually imagined to be. Far from retelling a familiar story, Byrne’s book uses new research and new techniques to give us Jane Austen for the 21st century.

I've loved Jane Austen for a long time. i re-read her novels every year or so and yet I'd never really explored her biographies before. After I read her letters, I decided I needed more information and found this book. It's beautifully written, not at all dry, taking the bare bones of what I thought I knew about Austen and opening up her life, her context, her novels in a way that is still with me, weeks after finishing. Gorgeous.

After falling in love with Nella Last's War, I desperately wanted more of the story. This continues in the same tone as Nella and her community try to adjust to life in post-war England. So wonderful.

Historia
This third compelling volume sees Nella, now in her sixties, writing of what ordinary people felt during those years of growing prosperity in a modernising Britain. Her diary offers a detailed, moving and humorous narrative of daily life at a time that shaped the society we live in today. It is an account that’s full of surprises as we learn more about her relationship with ‘my husband’ (never ‘Will’) and her fears of nuclear war.

I love Nella Last's War and Nell Last's Peace - this was not quite as engaging as the first two but wrapped up her story in a satisfying way.

In this rich and memorable evocation of the fictional South Riding of Yorkshire are the lives, loves and sorrows of the central characters. There is Sarah Burton, fiery young headmistress; Robert Carne of Maythorpe Hall, a councillor tormented by his own disastrous marriage; Jo Astell, a socialist fighting poverty and his own illness; and Mrs Beddows, the first woman Alderman of the district (like Winifred's own mother).

Historia
When Jeanette Winterson left home at 16 because she was in love with a woman, Mrs. Winterson asked her: "Why be happy when you could be normal?" This book is the story of a life's work to find happiness. It is the story of how the painful past returned to haunt Jeanette's later life, and send her on a journey into madness and out again, in search of her real mother. It is also a book about other people's stories, showing how fiction and poetry can form a string of guiding lights, a life raft which supports us when we are sinking.

Would you listen to Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? again? Why?
I actually listened to this twice and read the book in paperback. Enormous Jeanette Winterson fan and to have her reading it was just the most wonderful treat.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It was short enough I knocked it over in a couple of sittings.

Why did I wait so long?
Revisado: 05-08-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would. Any Jane Austen fan knows that her letter writing is prized - much is written about how her letters are as funny and delightful as her novels and I wasn't disappointed. Even the most mundane details were fun to read about.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jane Austen obviously.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
i very nearly did.
Any additional comments?
Beautifully read - love Fiona Shaw. I just wished it was longer.
