Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Science Matters!
Revisado: 02-27-24
I have to say I was a little leery about this story after seeing The Martian, but I’m happy to say this book is so much better!
Andy does an excellent job of creating a believable Earth doomsday scenario where humans stop bickering long enough to achieve a truly global goal. The incorporation of real science, human foibles and a plausible alien encounter is amazing.
The alien doesn’t look like a hominid with funny ears, can’t live in Earth’s atmosphere, and doesn’t speak English or even have eyes. This is the best of what humanity could be.
To top it off it has a surprising and happy ending.
I will definitely listen to this book again. I think I has excellent movie potential.

Detailed Consequences
Revisado: 10-11-23
Vaclav, Thanks for assembling this comprehensive overview of all that really matters and the limitations of humanity to understand and predict the consequences of our actions and technologies. The hard taught lessons learned during the 20th seem nearly forgotten in today’s entertainment landscape despite the fact that they are even more critical to navigating life today and beyond.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Historia
It's spring in England, and location scout Kate Sharp has returned to the quaint village of Nether Woodsmoor with its lush gardens, budding hedgerows, and mellow stone cottages to work on a Jane Austen television documentary. The unique opportunity also gives her the chance to explore a possible romance with Alex, the deliciously rumpled local scout. Rumors of recently discovered Jane Austen letters stir up the production, but then tragedy strikes and a stranger dies in a fire in a village cottage. Soon it's evident that the fire wasn't an accident, but murder.

This is a fun mystery. There is no horror or extremely cruel parts even though there is a murder Which is always sad. I continue to learn a lot about location scouts and the English countryside via these books.

Fantastic Summary of The Climate Problem
Revisado: 03-25-20
From economics and politics to science and human behavior, this short audio book does a fantastic job of explaining the Climate Problem and the dilemmas we planetary occupants face. Unlike so many good climate books, this one does not require a college science degree to understand. I hope many others are able too get The Big Picture this book presents so clearly.

Historia
The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement’s climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a regenerative world that has net-zero emissions. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can, and must, do to fend off disaster.

Mandatory for Humanity
Revisado: 03-04-20
I would love to say this book is a mandatory listen for all humanity, and in fact it is. However, while the book touches on many topics we all should think seriously about, its presentation seems too elitist to truly reach out and capture the attention and concerns of the people it needs to address. Despite this point, the books brevity makes it a hopeful starting point.

Non-Geeks Should Find Value Here
Revisado: 02-26-20
As an electrical and software engineer, I greatly enjoyed this book. A number of the topics were things I did not know had names. I had to discover and solve them myself over 25 years while building and supporting a high volume trading system. The example algorithms are Right On!
However, I was also fully aware throughout the book that a Non-Geek, Non-Math or Statistics reader could easily get bogged down by the mention of things they don't understand. While the authors do a great job of explaining things plainly, there are many tech terms that could throw you off. Ignore the Tech Terms you don't understand and just listen to the Big Picture being presented regarding what computers and humans can and cannot do, and how that relates to the challenges of everyday life.
