With Conan the Cimmerian, Robert E. Howard created more than the greatest action hero of the twentieth century---he also launched a genre that came to be known as sword and sorcery. But Conan was not the first archetypal adventurer to spring from Howard's fertile imagination.

Historia
Kris Marshall (My Family) stars in this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of the famous diarist's account of the aftermath of the Great Fire of London. Following on from the acclaimed radio dramatisation of Pepys' complete diaries, this further instalment of his chronicles focuses on events following the cataclysmic inferno that destroyed much of the capital 400 years ago. When the Great Fire of 1666 was finally extinguished, little remained of London but smouldering rubble.

Historia
Kris Marshall and Katherine Jakeways star as Mr & Mrs Pepys in this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of the world famous diaries. Samuel Pepys was 26 when he decided to start keeping a diary, in January 1660. For the next 10 years he faithfully recorded the day's events and confessed his innermost thoughts. That diary has since become one of our most important, and fascinating, historical documents. Pepys gave us eyewitness accounts of some of the great events of the 17th century, including the Great Fire of London and the Second Dutch War.

MASTERFUL PRODUCTION!!!! With Colin Frissel!!!!
Revisado: 05-29-24
I've listened to hundreds...likely thousands...of audio dramas over my lifetime.....from the 5 or 6 y.o. listening to vinyl dramatizations of the Classics of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells to my ''rediscovery'' of Old Time Radio in the '70's to books on tape.....8-tracks (egad!)........CDs and now streaming. This is WITHOUT DOUBT one of the finest productions that I have enjoyed over the decades. Don't miss the ''all-too-brief'' sequel which, though straying far from the diary as it brings you to Pepys' deathbed, is a wonderful addition to this incredible journey to the 17th century Restoration times.
Kris Marshall a.k.a. Colin Frissel has proven AGAIN that he can portray the God of Sex
WONDERFUL CAST
WONDERFUL production
WONDERFUL sound effects

These are a great way to introduce yourself to the works of a masterful author who does tragically too young! The two audio dramas are top notch…. The Troubles abridgment was fun, but left me wanting more; so I’ve purchased the full novel narrative as well. If you enjoy historical drama with more than a touch of delicious irony, you will love the Empire Trilogy

Historia
The Irish Century series is the story of the Irish people's epic struggle for independence through the tumultuous course of the 20th century. Morgan Llywelyn's magisterial multi-novel chronicle of that story began with 1916, which was followed by 1921, 1949, and 1972. It now concludes with 1999: A Novel of the Celtic Tiger and the Search for Peace. 1999 brings the story from 1972 to the disarmament talks and beginnings of reconciliation among the Irish at the end of the twentieth century.

In the best-selling tradition of The Swerve and A Distant Mirror, The Verge tells the story of a period that marked a decisive turning point for both European and world history. Here, author Patrick Wyman examines two complementary and contradictory sides of the same historical coin: the world-altering implications of the developments of printed mass media, extreme taxation, exploitative globalization, humanistic learning, gunpowder warfare, and mass religious conflict in the long term, and their intensely disruptive consequences in the short-term.

The saga begins in tribal, pre-Christian Ireland during the reign of the fierce and mighty High Kings at Tara, with the tale of two lovers whose travails cleverly echo the ancient Celtic legend of Cuchulainn. From that stirring beginning, Rutherfurd takes the listener on a powerfully imagined journey through the centuries. Through the interlocking stories of a memorable cast of characters we see Ireland through the lens of its greatest city.

Irish historical fiction by a master storyteller
Revisado: 02-13-22
This first volume in the Dublin saga certainly met expectations. I have read nearly all of Mr. Rutherfurd’s work and held off on this one only because of the daunting size! However listening to it made it more accessible.
The trials and tribulations of these Dublin families brought me to tears more than once. My only complaint is that the narrator missed at least one notable passage: the end of the chapter on Brian Boru.
