This book is a sort of what would happen if Jim & Pam from the Office got stuck in a zombie apocalypse. Interesting take. On to book 2.

Historia
In a matter of weeks, Massachusetts has been overrun by an insidious rabies-like virus that is spread by saliva. But unlike rabies, the disease has a terrifyingly short incubation period of an hour or less. Those infected quickly lose their minds and are driven to bite and infect as many others as they can before they inevitably succumb. Hospitals are inundated with the sick and dying, and hysteria has taken hold. To try to limit its spread, the commonwealth is under quarantine and curfew. But society is breaking down and the government's emergency protocols are faltering.

Not your normal Apocalypse book
Revisado: 02-08-25
First book of Paul’s I’ve read. I was very impressed. This is to me, as someone who has read a ton of apocalypse books, is a more real version. The people in the novel THINK they’re in an apocalypse & some attempt to act like they’ve seen in movies, books, etc… very interesting take.
If you are looking for a typical zombie apocalypse book, this might not be for you. If you are looking for what real people would do in a disaster (maybe like COVID), then this might be for you.
Writing is strong & well done. I will try a other of his books for sure.

Historia
The red night of bells heralds global catastrophe. Annihilation on a biblical scale. Seeing the morning is no blessing. The handful of scattered survivors are confronted by blood-red skies and an infestation of predatory horrors that never originated on earth. An occupying force intent on erasing the remnants of animal life from the planet. Across the deserted landscapes of England, bereft of infrastructure and society, the overlooked can either hide or try to outrun the infernal hunting terrors. Until a rumour emerges claiming that the sea may offer an escape.

Day of the Triffids re-imaging
Revisado: 12-20-24
If you realize this is a re-imaging of the classic Day of the Triffids, and you liked that book (which I do), then you are sure to like this book. Like DOTT, the story is more about the main character and how people act after a big event that changes the world, rather than the actual monsters themselves. In the DOTT, the framework monsters were plant spores from outer space that grew to become the Triffids. In this one it is the mysterious RED moon and the things that come out in the RED. In the DOTT, the main character tension was how to treat the blind people in the world post EVENT. I thought the author did a good job of re-imaging this tension thru a different avenue... but a very straight forward apples to apples change.
If are looking for an expanded THE MIST by SK book, this is not it. There isn't a ton of horror and ripping and blood, etc... though I'd definitely be on board for that book as well. In fact, I was kinda hoping this would be that book and I nearly returned it 2 hours in but then it clicked that this was really the re-imaging of DOTT, and then I got the book and really enjoyed it.
Last note - This author has great story frame ideas but I sometimes struggle with his writing style. He likes to sit in a scene and describe a lot of the details that many other authors might gloss over to keep the pacing of the story. It takes some getting used to and every time I read one of his books, I really struggle, especially at the beginning. If you are looking for a fast paced story, this is probably not the author for you.

GREAT SERIES THAT'S LOSING IT'S LUSTER
Revisado: 12-17-24
Love these books but the series is starting to go nowhere. The "In the Arms of Family" portion of the book happens with a little over an hour to go in the audiobook. Not complaining too much, there is still some meat on the bone in the series but 7 hours of meandering followed by 2 hours of what the book was supposed to be about is starting to get annoying. The same thing happened in the last book as well, which I also enjoyed, but it is getting annoying when you read the description and think "ok, let's flipping do this" only for the last 1-2 hours of the 9 hour book getting you there.

ADULTS ACTING LIKE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS
Revisado: 12-17-24
I don't normally read this author so it is my fault that I didn't realize what I was getting myself into. The premise was great. The beginning was good... but then it went from what I thought was going to be a horror novel into a 20-something angst book where two of the characters happen to be werewolves every 30 or so days. I wish the author had leaned more into the horror side.
Lots of sighs, nervous flickering of eyes, misunderstandings that go unaddressed for 30 days, etc... if the main characters were adults and talked about their problems rather than heavy sighing and walking away angry like middle schoolers, I guess the audiobook would have been like 18 minutes long.
I'd return the audiobook but we aren't allowed to return them anymore, so a wasted $13.

Historia
For graduate student Jeremy Freirs, citified, cynical, yet prone to daydreams, summer is the time to shed a few pounds and finally get some reading done for a course on Gothic literature. He's picked just the right place: the small, secluded village of Gilead, New Jersey, only 90 minutes from Manhattan but, with its antique customs and clannish traditions, seemingly centuries away. For farmers Sarr and Deborah Poroth, young members of Gilead's fundamentalist community, the summer threatens a conflict between their passionate natures and the stern dictates of their faith.

SLOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW
Revisado: 07-08-24
This book is VERY, VERY slow. In the nearly 22 hours of listening, there's probably a 5 hour story here. Not sure why I needed about 18 hours of the story as there were scenes that after finishing it, didn't tie in or go anywhere.
When I got to the 5 hour mark, I was sure something was going to start happening - I mean you need the actual "thing" to occur and then the aftermath - nope. Everything happened in the last 30 minutes of the recording and then the end dropped off a cliff and not in a good way.
I promised myself I was going to finish this thing because I'm not a quitter and because I'd heard this was a "classic." When it was finally over, I literally thanked the gods and deleted it off my listening device as fast as I could.

Historia
John Hawkins is counting down his last days as chief of police on the Lone Crow Reservation in the lonely, frigid woods of the Yukon. But when a faceless body with mysterious wounds washes up on the shores of the Porcupine River, he’s pulled deeper in than ever before. Hawkins and coroner Jacob Littlecorn suspect the disfigured body is that of theoretical physicist Graham Raphelson, also known as the “molecular madman of Trinity College”, who recently disappeared.

Good idea but turned into blah body horror porn
Revisado: 12-23-23
Some really good ideas here. Had a lot of potential as I started to figure out what the mash up was - think the FLY, meets Attack of the Body Snatchers, meets Event Horizon, meets spooky setting you can't escape from - really, really awesomeness... and then the ball was dropped.
The story, like several of the author's other storys I've tried to listen to, turns into body horror porn. Dude get over the shock value and move on. You've got some really awesome strings here when you aren't trying to spend 30-45 minutes on a character peeling off his fingernails or pulling his nerves out of his arms. Move on. There's a reason in most stories the author doesn't spend an hour talking about how the monster is digesting the guy he just ate, it gets old and redundant. MOVE ON!!
If you are like me - you run past this author, click on the description of the book, and think to yourself, "wow that sounds really cool. I should try that out," just realize the story idea is pure awesomeness, but half of the story will be 12-year old boy gross out description of some type of body horror. This is the third book by this author I have tried to read and it ends up being the same thing every time. Like the other 2 books, I will probably return this title. As much as I want to like this story, I can't.

You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile - always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it's attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet - and inspired more than one copycat.

Slow - GO - dropped ball
Revisado: 12-06-23
It was difficult at the beginning to get into this book. There were a lot of "ominous," "I could feel something bad was going to happen," and that sort of stuff that took steam out of the locomotive for me. You can build tension in other ways...
Then I got hooked, found a hard copy in the library and started reading along with the audiobook. The middle of the book is really well done as the author tells the story of what happened in the past and marries it up with what's going on today. Very well done all the way up to the twist.
Then the TWIST happened, or as I'd call it in this book, the ole' bait and switch. Without ruining the book, that's all I'll say. Major let down after the TWIST. Everything is explained away in like 2 paragraphs and then it's over. All the "ominous" and "I knew something bad was about to happens" suddenly all got explained and bam, OVER. Thanks for reading. Big let down.
He has another book out that was mentioned once in the book, in passing. Midway through this one, I was 99% sure I was going to read that one too but after the huge let down, going to pass on it.

The names have been changed to protect ...
Revisado: 09-27-23
Let me begin by saying I love Scalzi. I have most of his shorter stories and started the Old Man series. I thoroughly enjoyed all of them, this one included. This was a really interesting set up to what could have been a great story and there in lies my only issue with his writing. Every single story is exactly the same, just the names and the actual situation is slightly different. Here is the formula, and once again, I'm not totally complaining I love the formula and have most of his book. I just wish there was more meat on the bones - possibly something longer than 8:01- 8:05 hours of awesomeness, and possibly a change up to the formula every now and then. So to the formula:
1 - Protagonist - loner adult male down on his luck, normally very smart, nerdy but for whatever reason, his life hasn't turned out the way it is supposed to. We will call him LONER. You could use LONER AWESOMENESS NERDY GUY (LANG for short if you like).
2 - The set up - roughly 80% of the book, or about 6.5 hours of the 8 hour book, give or take. Loner male is introduced to a really interesting situation. In this book, it's that his uncle is a villain, or a guy you once knew works with Godzilla's in an alternate universe, or people can't die anymore, or insert any other really cool idea here. It's here that we are introduced to a collection of mostly cool, nerdy, witty sidekicks of the LONER. The LONER is not alone anymore. Sidekicks tend to be snarky and get the LONERs humor while at the same time introducing him to how the INSERT SITUATION works. There's always one SIDEKICK that is also very smart and is a point of tension with the LONER. Someone who is used to being in charge normally and is kind of replaced but still on the team. It's at this time we learn that the LONER is actually confident, but not confident, hyper intelligent (he slowly moves towards being Matt Damon's character in ROUNDERS), but doesn't know enough of the situation to go it alone, and that he likes animals - cats, Godzilla's, insert animal as needed. It's also at this time we slowly learn about the VILLAIN.
3 - the VILLAIN- someone in the (INSERT SITUATION) that starts out as a rando character but ends up being someone who can majorly benefit from the LONER screwing up this new situation. Normally he starts out as intelligent but ends up being a total jerk and can't keep up with the intellect of the LONER and crew. The VILLAIN is normally very well established in the INSERT SITUATION, tends to be rich and well connected, and slowly turns into a mixture of Dr. EVIL and the Russian in the ROUNDERS movie.
4- Conflict and resolution - the last 15-20% of the book, or roughly 1.5 hours, almost on the dot, every audiobook. LONER is tricked by the villain and his witty plan to trap the LONER and win everything (alternate universe, get away with an actual murder, or in this case, get out of debt). Sidekicks help give LONER context and build tension, then the chapter ends. NEXT chapter = ... and the LONER baits and then destroys the Villain with his wit, normally a really cool trap, some really good dialogue, and the conflict is resolved. The last 34-37 minutes of the story (almost on the dot every story) is an explanation of the really cool trap, normally involving a WRONG the LONER fixed earlier in the story with an animal or sidekick followed by the LONER moving on with his life and sailing off into the sunset, now with exactly what he wanted at the beginning of the story. The LONER thanks the SIDEKICK that he had tension with earlier in the story, they become, if not friends then respected equals. The tension Sidekick usually helped the LONER win the day and now stands to move back into a leadership role.
Rinse and repeat.
Once again, I'm not complaining. I love the stories and characters like I love a semi okay meal at McDonalds. And why do we love McDonalds or INSERT FAST FOOD PLACE HERE? Because every single time (or mostly), we get the exact same experience over and over again. The fries are hot and perfect, there's just enough ketchup on the INSERT MAIN ENTREE HERE, and we savor the bites all the way to the last bite and then over some period of time we decide we want to visit again for the same experience. That's Scalzi. A perfect INSERT FAST FOOD PLACE for short sci-fi. But like INSERT FAST FOOD PLACE, 10 minutes after finishing, you realize you didn't really get full, there wasn't enough there, and you should have gone home to have an actual dinner. Unfortunately, that too is Scalzi. Each story is roughly 80% INTRODUCTION, 15% INSERT CONFLICT and CONFLICT RESOLUTION, and 5% RIDING OFF INTO THE SUNSET. At 8 hours each story, that's 6 hours of talking about how cool Godzilla is, an hour of a conflict, and an 1/2 hour of explanation/ Sunset riding.
… And as I write all this, I slowly realize I'm hungry again for some INSERT FAST FOOD PLACE, and another Scalzi story.
