Historia
East House is the oldest and least desirable dorm on campus, but it has a draw for lonely university freshman Aleeza Kassam: Jay Hoque, the hot and broody student who vanished from East House five months ago without a trace. It’s irresistible to an aspiring investigative journalist like Aleeza. But when she starts receiving texts from Jay, the mystery takes an unexpected turn. To put it mildly.

Good time travel story line
Revisado: 04-19-25
I liked the story more than I thought I would. Cute time travel storyline with some missing person/potential murder suspense. A bit too much young adult angst for me but not over the top. It helped that I had been a college student (before cell phones) living in a dorm situation so could relate to roommate issues. (Some things don’t change with technology). Helps to find your friends group.

The reasons past & present that women are accused and hated as witches
Revisado: 12-14-24
I liked the historical perspective all the way up to modern times. I had already read that in certain places in Africa, people are still killed today as suspected witches or for supposedly magical body parts. I was not aware of how Christian beliefs had contributed to a fear of witches in these places.
It was enlightening to hear how women today are still sometimes accused of being witches (literally and figuratively) if they do not conform to the norms of society and Christian religion.

Not usually into UFO stories but this was extremely enjoyable
Revisado: 11-24-24
Was more about relationships between people and overcoming adversity than extra-terrestrial occurrences - though that was certainly a part of it too.

Historia
Meet Laszlo, eight-hundred-year-old demon and Hell’s least productive Curse Keeper. From his office beneath Midtown, he oversees the Drakeford Curse, which involves a pathetic family upstate and a mysterious black monolith. It’s a sexy enough assignment—colonial origins, mutating victims, et cetera—but Laszlo has no interest in maximizing the curse’s potential; he’d rather sunbathe in Ibiza, quaff martinis, and hustle the hustlers on Manhattan’s subway.

A charming demon, strong female character and an intriguing quest.
Revisado: 11-17-24
Besides the interesting characters, I loved the settings of the Catskills, Manhattan & Europe. Having been in most of the locations mentioned (though not Lichtenstein), I found myself trying to pinpoint exactly where the characters were. Having lived in Woodstock, NY and raised a family there, I debated about which town(s) the main character’s hometown was based on. I have a few ideas but nothing conclusive yet. Since my childhood was closer to NYC, I am also somewhat familiar with that city.
The settings combined with the personalities of the characters as they confront their challenges both externally and internally kept me going. A good book for older teens and up.

Historia
In the summer of 2022, Lee Berger lost 50 pounds in order to wriggle though impossibly small openings in the Rising Star cave complex in South Africa—spaces where his team has been unearthing the remains of Homo naledi, a proto-human likely to have coexisted with Homo sapiens some 250,000 years ago. Lead researcher Berger had never made his way into the dark, cramped, dangerous underground spaces where many of the naledi fossils had been found. Now he was ready to do so. Once inside the cave, Berger made shocking new discoveries that expand our understanding of this early hominid.

Historia
Historians have only recently awakened to the importance of the family, the basic social unit throughout human history. This book traces the development of marriage and the family from the Middle Ages to the early modern era. It describes how the Roman and barbarian cultural streams merged under the influence of the Christian church to forge new concepts, customs, laws, and practices. Century by century, it follows the development—sometimes gradual, at other times revolutionary—of significant elements in the history of the family.

Addition information to what previous books had given me
Revisado: 10-27-24
Narrator’s voice was somewhat monotone which made it a bit difficult to listen to. Still, I found the information interesting. Many things that were similar or dissimilar to modern times. Laughable how some of the same issues keep popping up.

By the time she was in her teens, Diamond had lived dozens of lives and lies, but as she grew older, love and trust turned to fear and violence, and her family—the only people she had in the world—began to unravel. With no way out and her identity burned so often that she had no proof she even existed, all that was left was a girl from nowhere.

Families are complicated - hers more than most.
Revisado: 09-14-24
It’s said that families are complicated. The author’s is definitely more complicated than most. Still, in the end she finds a way to come to terms with her family’s faults and decisions which also immensely impacted her own life. I grew up in a relatively stable, loving, middle-middle class family and still have some life-long issues because of certain decisions that my parents made when I was a child. The epilogue at the end of the book has life lessons learned that many of us could probably apply to our own lives.

Historia
Since the time of Columbus, Indian slavery was illegal in much of the American continent. Yet, as Andrés Reséndez illuminates in his myth-shattering The Other Slavery, it was practiced for centuries as an open secret. There was no abolitionist movement to protect the tens of thousands of natives who were kidnapped and enslaved by the conquistadors, then forced to descend into the "mouth of hell" of 18th-century silver mines or, later, made to serve as domestics for Mormon settlers and rich Anglos.

Mortified at how little I knew of “The Other Slavery”
Revisado: 09-11-24
An extremely thorough treatise on the enslavement of Native peoples from Columbus until the 20th century. The book covers its start in the Caribbean and the subsequent spread into Mexico and what is currently New Mexico, Utah, California and other parts of the United States as well as briefly mentioning Canada. I am ashamed at how these native people were treated. Though I was aware of some of the genocidal events that took place, I am embarrassed at how little I knew of the slavery aspect. Every Mexican, Canadian and U.S. citizen should read this book.
