Historia
When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

Fully fleshed tragedy
Revisado: 08-06-19
This book is elegantly written with more hope and sadness than one can absorb. I didn’t want to accept the ending because it was so real.

Historia
Cold War Copa is the first book in The Sideman Mysteries, a pulp fiction tale of Sin City during its Golden Age from author, playwright, and composer Phil Swann. Las Vegas in 1965: Gangsters, showgirls, the Rat Pack, cool is king, and everything swings. Especially Trip Callaway, a young, wise-cracking trumpet player working the Sands. But when people around him start getting knocked off, Trip is thrust into a dangerous maze of secrets, lies, murder, and Cold War intrigue, where nothing is how it seems and no one is who they say they are.

Like hanging out with a good friend
Revisado: 07-11-19
This book was a joy from the first word. From the time the showgirl was murdered, I had to know what was next. Tripp was great to hang out with; part vulnerable, part wise-ass, perfect good buddy. I loved the narrative of the book, and I also just loved the feel of the book. Swann paints great atmospheric pictures. The story is interesting even before something happens. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Historia
Named for the work by Haydn in which the instrumentalists leave the stage one after another until only a single violin remains playing, this is the story of a man who has outlived most of his friends. Having reached the six-month anniversary of his lover's death, he embarks on a journey of remembrance that will recount his struggle to become a writer and his discovery of what it means to be a gay man.
