Historia
Tommo has been aboard a whaling ship for six grueling months when he decides, with his friend Toby, to escape and hide on a wild island. They are not alone. The island is home to a tribe called the Typees known for being cannibals. But when Tommo breaks his leg, they can no longer avoid the valley the Typees call home. They venture down into the tribe’s territory, but instead of violence, the Typees greet them happily with food and shelter. Tommo and Toby quickly become accustomed to life in the tribe and even prefer aspects of island life to their so-called “civilized” society.

My first foray into this author, and I found him to be surprisingly funnier than I had anticipated.

Historia
This brilliant satirical novel, tracing the life and loves of Ernest Pontifex, has continued in popularity since its original publication in 1903. Every generation finds in The Way of All Flesh a reaffirmation of youth's rightful struggle against the tyranny of harsh parents and its admirable will for freedom of personal expression.

Relatable and endearing.

For me, this story was further confirmation of the unending humanity of people. So many of the events seemed entirely relatably modern, despite being nearly 150 years past.

Historia
Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life, even while he feels himself incapable of understanding human beings. Oba Yozo's attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a "clown" to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

I feel that this book will stay with me.
Revisado: 12-13-21
Every story we read stays as a part of our collective experience of the world, but this story and character have exposed me to an entirely different worldview. The protagonist sees life and humanity in such a different way from myself that I cannot help but be affected by having seen through his eyes.
I greatly appreciate the epilogue and it's acknowledgement of the skewed perspective from which we cannot help but see ourselves.
