I wish the book had been a bit longer and had more of the back story of other characters. I loved how reliably obnoxious Jackson, Ho, and Shirley are; how reliably loyal Standish, Jackson, Marcus, and Luisa are; and at the same time they are still unpredictable.

Like the surprises, even if some of them were foreshadowed, I still want to find out what Mick Herron wants for his characters. Reminds me of the tv series The Last of Us where they give you a brief moment of happiness and the. Take it away, break your heart, and yet leave you with hope.

The Obeilisk Gate did not disappoint in continuing the great and powerful storytelling of N.K. Jemisin while Robin Miles helped me “fall up” and walk with entrancing and compelling characters. Robin is like David Tennant in that they become every single character and even with the narration going at a furious pace I can tell who is speaking or thinking.

I fell asleep BUT

Recovering from gum surgery and not being able to sleep well at night, John, Zachary, Tony, and Nona helped distract me. And sometimes I slept. For this book, I woke up in time to hear the end and the big reveal. Disappointed that I had spoiled it for myself, I went back two chapters and it was actually quite funny to hear it all out of order. I was able to appreciate everything about the story and the performance in a very different way. Loved it!
