Historia
In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

Picked this book out on a whim, and I'm glad I did. An interesting tale of loss, horror, New York history, old world monsters, and of course, fishing.
A nice and easy listen, though it may go a bit long here and there.
Well read by Danny Campbell.

Historia
In a garden sit the aged Kublai Khan and the young Marco Polo—Mongol emperor and Venetian traveler. Kublai Khan has sensed the end of his empire coming soon. Marco Polo diverts his host with stories of the cities he has seen in his travels around the empire: cities and memory, cities and desire, cities and designs, cities and the dead, cities and the sky, trading cities, hidden cities. As Marco Polo unspools his tales, the emperor detects these fantastic places are more than they appear.

Worth a Second Read
Revisado: 04-19-25
For a short book, Invisible Cities carries a lot of weight. Within the dialogue of Marco Polo and Kublai Khan, of the many fictitious cities of the world, his commentary on language, culture, life, death, and so much more. As soon as I started listening, I immediately wanted an animated series based on the book, its cities and its conversations.
Narrator does an excellent job. I can't wait to dive into it again.

Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

I really enjoyed this novel, well written and researched, by a modern master. I also feel that there are a lot of themes that still being addressed today, like sectarianism, modern vs tradition, religion vs. science and philosophy.
Very well read. Recommend.

As the world's foremost cycling nation, the Netherlands is the only country where the number of bikes exceeds the number of people, primarily because the Dutch have built a cycling culture accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or economic means. Building the Cycling City examines the triumphs and challenges of the Dutch while also presenting stories of North American cities already implementing lessons from across the Atlantic.

What All Cities Should Strive to Be
Revisado: 03-29-25
Admittedly, as an american, i listened to this book with a degree of jealousy. While some are trying, most American cities pale in comparison to Dutch cities in design and love of the bicycle. Most Americans seem to be unwilling to change tack when it comes to giving up on our autocentric Society. Nonetheless, one can dream. And in many cases, this book offers a blueprint of how to do it.
The book is good though at times goes deeper than my attention span might allow. Well read. I recommend checking this book out.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Historia
The appearance, more than 60 years after the Spanish Civil War ended, of mass graves containing victims of Francisco Franco's death squads finally broke what Spaniards call "the pact of forgetting" - the unwritten understanding that their recent, painful past was best left unexplored. At this charged moment, Giles Tremlett embarked on a journey around the country and through its history to discover why some of Europe's most voluble people have kept silent so long.

Hidden Corners of Spain
Revisado: 03-06-25
A little uneven but still good. I enjoyed the discussion of the search for Franco's victims as well as the prosecution trade, but and the roots of flamenco. I did find the author a bit ambivalent towards the basques and rural people.
Well read by the narrator. Give it a read.

Contemptuous of their parents, who pass their days in a stupor of liquor, drugs, and sex, the children feel neglected and suffocated at the same time. When a destructive storm descends on the summer estate, the group's ringleaders - including Eve, who narrates the story - decide to run away, leading the younger ones on a dangerous foray into the apocalyptic chaos outside.

Adulthood
Revisado: 02-12-25
I enjoyed this book. I know the intent was to focus on the similarity between the action in the story and the chapters of the Bible, and it showed up here and there. But what struck me more was the commentary on adulthood and its failures. That part was really well done and interesting.
Good book. Reading was great too.

A Warning to the Future
Revisado: 02-07-25
People don't change for the better as much as we'd like to think, even when the cost is millions of lives. They'll look the other way, make excuses, rationalize away the worst dictators and the collective ability to do murder and destruction on a massive scale. Even time and punishment doesn't seem to change that.
It makes me worry about where we are today.
Well read and definitely recommended for all.

Widely hailed as a revelation of a "lost" golden age, this history brings to vivid life the rich and thriving culture of medieval Spain, where, for more than seven centuries, Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived together in an atmosphere of tolerance, and literature, science, and the arts flourished.

A Few Centuries of Co-Existence
Revisado: 01-30-25
Very detailed chronology of Al-Andalus, from the Umayyads in Cordoba through the expulsions of the Muslims and Jews in the 15-16th centuries. For a while, Spain was a center of science, philosophy, literature and culture, brought together by Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Civil wars, crusades, and the reconquista brought it all to an end, leaving behind only a whisper of history and a few buildings.
The reading is a bit wooden, but clear and concise nonetheless.
A good read about an almost forgotten time.

A Loving Depiction of the End of the World
Revisado: 01-20-25
The northern hemisphere having destroyed itself in a massive war, people in southern Australia await the coming fallout, and death. They do so with dignity and humanity, trying to lead out their lives and retain some type of normalcy. The end of the human race bears down on them.
This story is a loving depiction of what it might be like to look down certain doom, mostly with dignity and brotherhood.
I can't say enough about how engaging and great this book is, despite the grim subject matter. Excellent reading as well.
Definitely recommend.
