...and it's right in so many ways.
There's no instant lust in this one, but there is instant chemistry, and a warmth that's not found in every romance. It makes the eventual love even better.
Loved Ildiko and Brishen. Loved to hate Brishen's mother.
The world building is nicely done. Just the right amount of detail to make it real, although I suspect that there are a couple of things that will be fleshed out when needed. This is a tightly written book: no filler to tune out. And the twist at the end is jaw- dropping.

When something special comes out in audio I hold my breath to see what the narration will be like. No worries there: Gabrielle Baker is perfect. I may or may not re-read this, but I will be re-listening to it many, many times.I have the tentative release of book 2 marked on the calendar. Please bring it out on audio and don't change the narrator!

I'm a fan of this series and was very excited to find that it was coming out in an audio format. The series is wonderful, and the books just keep getting better. The reason why this didn't get a 5 star review was the narrator. First, the sample doesn't do her justice. Her delivery is much more smooth and relaxed. Secondary characters were very well done, as was Cyn. What didn't translate was the sexual tension between Cyn and Raphael that started at their first meeting. When I read the book, I felt it right away and it just kept building. While listening, I thought that it fell short. However, the sex scenes were well done. Also, Traci Odom needs to...practice?....her interpretation of Raphael. It's okay, but everything else is delivered so smoothly and consistently, that there were moments when Raphael snapped me out of the book. I'm wondering if the voice she's giving him is a bit out of her vocal range. Worth a credit? Yes. A super-bargain if it goes on sale. I look forward to the next book--which rocks with a wonderfully written villain, and an unexpected betrayal.

Poppy, running a bookstore? No....well, yes. But she also turns out to be the person that's running things in Darkest London. Very cool to see a powerful woman, in charge of a secret organization, working out problems with the husband as they take on demons! And she does it all very well. Great love story and Poppy turns out to be a kick-ass heroine when she's not selling books. Love this series!

Narration was great, the length was good, and what a sweetheart Peanut is! The guy almost stole the show from his parents. Lot's of fun! It's a good listen to insert between two heavier audiobooks.

It's a classic, and a favorite that I've grown up with. I thought the audiobook would be perfect, but I didn't take into consideration all those songs that Tolkien loved to write. It's the only reason I couldn't listen to it straight through, and ultimately why I didn't finish it.

Great Book, but Narrator Needs To Do Her Research

Loved the ebook, and actually pre-ordered the audiobook. Very good story with resolutions, reveals, and questions left unanswered. There were set-ups for at least 2 different characters.
But the narrator....I don't think she's absolutely awful. Some of the voices were very well done, as was the straight narration and the sex scenes stayed hot. She could have been a very good fit. What I *can* say is that she ruined the illusion of being in a different world. I can't imagine anyone reading the description of Seminus demons, and turning them from, arguably, the sexiest creatures in paranormal romance into guys who sounded like girls complete with faerie dust. These are characters that we've fallen in love with and have been interpreted by many narrators. Every time a Sem started talking I winced and decided it was a good time to let my mind wander. That's a first for me.
And then there were characters with accents that just didn't make sense. It sounded like Tavin was speaking with a Mexican accent. Ares....not sure what accent that was, but it distracted me almost as much as the Sems did. And then there's Revenant, who will be the hero for the next book. He had a lovely Texas Twang going on, which I thought was wonderful and could be very sexy. But, where'd that come from? It's a major point in the book that Rev has spent his whole life in Sheoul, right?
These missteps, and sometimes blatant mistakes, weren't enough to make me return the book since these are secondary characters we're talking about. But, unlike some of the other books in the series which I've listened to many times, I won't be listening to this one again. I will be re-reading Reaver before I start in on Revenant's book. I will not be pre-ordering, and will perhaps even pass on the audio version if Helen Wick is narrating again. I believe Helen is the ninth narrator for this series. That is insane with reoccurring characters. I don't know who's responsible for this. Please go back to Hilary Huber. She's done a fantastic job and is, I think, the best of the nine. But, if you can't, or won't, hire her.....please, pick someone who will do her research before she goes to work, and stick with her.

Fans have been in love with Daniel since he was a teen in book one. All grown up and he is the MacKenzie we wish was real! The book played like a movie as I listened. Loved Daniel and Violet as a couple, and was delighted to listen as the youngest MacKenzie's made appearances. Violet was welcomed by the entire family. Angela Dawe continues to do a great job in bringing these characters to life.

Finished this one with the same warm fuzzy feeling that I have after all the Highland Pleasures books. Don't skip this novella! It may be shorter, but is as satisfying as any full-length novel. Great, great story!

Not just three great stories, but three well written stories that provide all the romance I want with something I've never encountered before--berserkers! Don't be fooled. These shorter stories are as well done as any novella from a well-known, long-standing series. Loved the characters enough to wish for full length novels. I thought the narrator did a good job, and I hope to find the next trilogy from this author on audio soon.

Any additional comments?

This series is amazing: World Building, Plot, Characters....everything is top notch. I loved The Iron Duke and will re-listen to it many times. Great characters, and Yasmeen could have stolen the show if she was given any more time in the first book. I'm glad she got her own book. Heart of Steel raises the bar for the rest of the series and Faye Adele is a wonderful narrator, but she knocks it out of the ball park when she plays Yasmeen. These books do stand alone, but I suggest reading them in order as characters from past books do show up.
