Historia
For video game fans, the name Blizzard Entertainment was once synonymous with perfection. The renowned company behind classics like Diablo and World of Warcraft was known to celebrate the joy of gaming over all else. What was once two UCLA students' simple mission—to make games they wanted to play—launched an empire with thousands of employees, millions of fans, and billions of dollars. But when Blizzard cancelled a buzzy project in 2013, it gave Bobby Kotick, the infamous CEO of corporate parent Activision, the excuse he needed to start cracking down on Blizzard's proud autonomy.

Great Book on Blizzard
Revisado: 12-16-24
Very insightful read on the rise and fall of Blizzard. I do feel bad for developers, that’s a tough industry to be in.

Historia
Korea has a long, riveting history—it is also a divided nation. South Korea is a vibrant democracy, the tenth largest economy, and is home to a world-renowned culture. North Korea is ruled by the most authoritarian regime in the world, a poor country in a rich region, and is best known for the cult of personality surrounding the ruling Kim family. But both Koreas share a unique common history. Victor Cha and Ramon Pacheco Pardo draw on decades of research to explore the history of modern Korea, from the late nineteenth century, Japanese occupation, and Cold War division to the present day.

Good but Offers Little New Insight
Revisado: 10-19-24
Having lived in South Korea for three years from 2005-08, I am always excited for new histories of South Korea. This one is good but didn’t really offer anything I haven’t read in other solid histories (I found the authors’ disparaging remarks of previous offerings in the prologue to be a little off-putting) or from the Asia section in the Economist. The period from 2010-2023 especially I found woefully generic and the insight the authors from their personal experience to not really be all that groundbreaking. Still though, anyone new to the topic won’t be disappointed, it is told really well in an easy-to-digest manner.

Historia
The principles of the French Revolution remain the only possible basis for a just society - even if, after more than 200 years, they are more contested than ever before. In A New World Begins, Jeremy D. Popkin offers a riveting account of the revolution that puts the listener in the thick of the debates and the violence that led to the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of a new society.

Good but a bit of a Slog at times
Revisado: 04-03-24
If you’re approaching French Revolution for the first time, do the Great Courses series. This one was okay but far too easy to tune in and out. Read the book too a couple years ago, remember liking it more than I did with the audio listen.

Great Listen, especially if you have just visited Venice
Revisado: 03-25-24
Not the flashiest or most action-packed mystery, but quiet engaging listen of a beautiful and fascinating place. I read it nearly two decades ago and remember liking it then, and after finally getting the chance to visit Venice had to listen this time and was just as satisfied. Realized a lot of what I knew about operas I learned from this book. And if you do visit Venice be sure to visit opera house it’s beautiful. Actually doing the tour reminded me of this book.

Historia
In the summer of 1914 most of Europe plunged into a war so catastrophic that it unhinged the continent's politics and beliefs in a way that took generations to recover from. The disaster terrified its survivors, shocked that a civilization that had blandly assumed itself to be a model for the rest of the world had collapsed into a chaotic savagery beyond any comparison.

While it’s not as good as Pursuit of Power for eloquence in my opinion it’s still an excellent survey of European history for this period.

Weak Murakami

This one just doesn’t work. Am a huge fan read it once and listened to it a second time. Ponderous, overlong and honestly at times a bit creepy (in a gross way ). Read his other works skip this one.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Historia
Among the conflicts that convulsed Europe during the nineteenth century, none was more startling and consequential than the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Deliberately engineered by Prussian chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the war succeeded in shattering French supremacy, deposing Napoleon III, and uniting a new German Empire. But it also produced brutal military innovations and a precarious new imbalance of power that together set the stage for the devastating world wars of the next century. In Bismarck’s War, historian Rachel Chrastil chronicles events on the battlefield in full.

Solid Overview on Looked-Over Topic
Revisado: 01-16-24
While I thought the subject matter was handled well, I felt that it read too much like a blandish university lecture series without an overall thrust to give it some oomph. Still though, if you’re interested in the topic it’s worth a listen. I found the lecturer to be a bit distracting at first but I got used to her.

Historia
As history, the uprisings of 1848 have long been overshadowed by the French Revolution of 1789 and the Russian revolutions of the early twentieth century. And yet in 1848 nearly all of Europe was aflame with conflict. Parallel political tumults spread like brush fire across the entire continent, leading to significant changes that continue to shape our world today. These battles for the future were fought with one eye kept squarely on the past. Revolutionary Spring is a new understanding of 1848 that offers chilling parallels to our present moment.

Revisado: 12-13-23
Meticulously researched and eloquently told. I really enjoyed it. Saying that, I think any person who has just a passing interest in history might find it a bit of a slog. Bill Bryson, Christopher Clark is not, but that’s a shame as I think he might have more interesting things to say.

Historia
Noted Japan expert Professor Mark J. Ravina of the University of Texas at Austin covers the politics, economics, and culture of the island nation since World War II - a conflict that saw the end of Japan’s dream of regional conquest, which Professor Ravina calls Empire 1.0. The country’s postwar leaders radically changed course, renouncing a strong military to pursue Empire 2.0 - Japan as an economic colossus.

Great Course, Feels Abbreviated
Revisado: 08-02-22
This course is great but it feels at times like the lectures were plucked at random from a longer more thorough course, which I would have preferred since the material is so engaging. The fact that the professor doesn’t really ever introduce or conclude his lectures lends to this sense. Also, the intro music for each lecture is odd and a little off putting imo.
