Historia
Architect Tom Faraday is determined to finish the high-concept, environmentally friendly home he's building in Norway - in the same place where he lost his wife, Aurelia, to suicide. It was their dream house, and he wants to honor her with it. Lexi Ellis takes a job as his nanny and immediately falls in love with his two young daughters, especially Gaia. But something feels off in the isolated house nestled in the forest along the fjord. Lexi sees mysterious muddy footprints inside the home.

A Fantastic, Beautifully Crafted Tale
Revisado: 02-08-24
This is a riveting, gothic story poised between the mythical and the real, but, refreshingly, the author does not feel the need to privilege one type of world over the other. It’s clear Cooke did meticulous research, and this enriches the novel greatly. I highly recommend this lovely book!!

Amber and Lacey are a Delight
Revisado: 07-18-23
These well told stories are a stark reminder that macro and micro-aggressions based on race are everywhere and all the time. Yet, Amber and Lacey make the book fun to listen to because their sense of humor permeates even the darkest stories. Also, their sisterly bond is so lovely to hear/see. Plus, their mother is clearly a superhero! She is, without exaggeration, awesome. Thanks for this much needed book, Amber & Lacey!

A Fun Read for a Film Professor
Revisado: 05-20-23
The Brothers’ are raw and vulnerable here in an endearing way, but I truly loved their openness about their journey into and within the screen storytelling ecosystems. I’ll certainly be sharing some of their anecdotes with my students. Two words: throw pillows. Working for studios is not all it’s cracked up to be. Independent work is a tough road, but it’s not impossible.

Historia
Begin Again is one of the great books on James Baldwin and a powerful reckoning with America’s ongoing failure to confront the lies it tells itself about race. Just as in Baldwin’s “after times,” argues Eddie S. Glaude Jr., when white Americans met the civil rights movement’s call for truth and justice with blind rage and the murders of movement leaders, so in our moment were the Obama presidency and the birth of Black Lives Matter answered with the ascendance of Trump and the violent resurgence of white nationalism.

A Brilliant and Timely Book
Revisado: 02-07-23
James Baldwin was a prophet but somehow a hopeful one. Glaude, Jr. weaves Baldwin’s writings through their crucial moments in history. In this book, the gift of Baldwin’s wisdom, anger, and love are powerfully expressed.

A Must Read for Those Working in the College Industrial Complex
Revisado: 01-29-23
Having been a college professor for 27 years, I have seen many of the negative shifts in higher ed that Bunch discusses, but this compelling book delves deeply into the history and causes of the crises in higher ed in the US. The problems seem intractable and the data Bunch provides can be depressing, but he also opines that we may be able to crawl out of the chasm of student debt as a nation with some changes that could reasonably be/become bipartisan.

Historia
At once a powerful evocation of his early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice to both the individual and the body politic, James Baldwin galvanized the nation in the early days of the civil rights movement with this eloquent manifesto. The Fire Next Time stands as one of the essential works of our literature.

Baldwin is eerily prescient of our current problems, or perhaps very little has changed in the last 50 years. Baldwin is one of the US’s most important prophets, and his work is needed now more than ever.

Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Excellent Book, So True It’s Painful
Revisado: 11-02-21
I grew up in this evangelical culture as an intelligent, independent young woman and witnessed the rampant hypocrisy this book describes. This well-researched book explains the path evangelicalism followed through the last century, illuminating how we as a nation ended up in our current state. White Christian nationalism with it’s patriarchal dictates, celebrating bellicosity while claiming victimhood, has poisoned the American church, its culture, and its politics.

The daughter of a Buddhist priest, Tsuneno was born in a rural Japanese village and was expected to live a traditional life much like her mother’s. But after three divorces - and a temperament much too strong-willed for her family’s approval - she ran away to make a life for herself in one of the largest cities in the world: Edo, a bustling metropolis at its peak. With Tsuneno as our guide, we experience the drama and excitement of Edo just prior to the arrival of American Commodore Perry’s fleet, which transformed Japan.

This is a thoroughly researched piece of historical writing that is delightful to read/listen to. Tying history to one woman’s journey is an ingenious conceit that works extremely well here. Brilliant and beautifully rendered!

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

Brilliant, Revelatory, and Much Needed
Revisado: 11-14-19
I suspected that an audio book about data would be dull and trying on the patience (all those numbers thrown around); however, I was dead wrong. The book « reads » like a real page-turner, a new discovery around every corner. Perez reads her own book like pro and has a very pleasant and expressive voice. Brava! Honestly, I thought I was angry about injustice wrought upon women and have been told I was overly so. This book shows quantitatively that I’m not angry enough. We have such a long way to go to achieve anything resembling parity and so much of the injustice is entirely preventable if women were only listened to and truly recognized as half the human race. Looking at the data, too often were not considered human at all. READ THIS.
