Poker, Sam Bankman Fried, and AI speculation

There are some interesting discussions of poker, and I learned a little bit about the pathology of Sam Bankman Fried, but I don’t really buy the the premise of the book regarding the river and the village. Life is much more complex and interesting than that.

Great Insight into Our Political Divisions

Bill Maher recognizes that we are going through two moments of insanity. One is the insanity created by Donald Trump. The other is the insanity of the woke, which is driving a lot of ordinary people, who would otherwise vote for Democrats, to opt to vote for Republicans. This book will challenge your thinking, and should be required reading for everybody involved in Democratic politics.

Excellent and Essential

Snyder provides an in depth analysis of Putin’s project to undermine democracy in Ukraine, Europe, and the United States. The facts demonstrate that Putin rescued Trump when he was bankrupt and took advantage of American weaknesses to put Trump in the White House in 2017. He also makes clear the role of outrageous lies in cementing authoritarian control.

Essential reading

Liz Cheney lays out facts and evidence about the January 6th insurrection. These facts and evidence were provided almost entirely by Republicans who had supported and worked for Trump. If the truth and the continuation of constitutional government matter to you, then this book is essential reading.

This is an outstanding narration of an essential masterpiece. Vanity Fair is as relevant today as when it was written. The narrator reveals Thackeray’s wit, irony, and literary mastery. It is thoroughly enjoyable.

Democracy is passé but I still like it.

As things are going, we will soon live in a country run the way Putin runs Russia. That seems to be fine to most people. I sort of like democracy, the rule of law, constitutional rights, and other frivolous things. So, I believe this book is very important. You can ignore this book if you like the idea of having
a great authoritarian leader. Otherwise, you should read it now. It probably will be banned once our transformation is complete.

Required reading for everyone involved in national politics

There is no value in wishing to advance any policy at the level of the federal government without understanding how a policy is made the law of the land. Lyndon Johnson got the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act, Medicare, and scores of other Acts passed because he knew how the House and Senate really operate, and knew how to get the votes he needed to have these Acts passed. The Master of the Senate - volume that precedes this one - provides the best portrait in print of how legislation gets passed, and it's not anything like what you learned in civics class. This volume shows how Johnson got the Kennedy program, including the Civil Rights Act, passed after Johnson was thrust with no warning into the presidency. This, after Kennedy's complete failure to get Congress to pass his inspiring and very popular programs. Caro is thorough and he writes well, so these long volumes are a pleasure to read. The audiobooks in this series are also very well narrated.

This is an excellent and important book on ethical leadership, the importance of the independence of the FBI from political influence, and the the effect that the Trump administration is having on our country. It is very well written and the narration by James Comey is very good.
