What a great story.
Revisado: 03-14-24
Initially, I was not impressed with the performance but I kept listening and concentrated on the story. That made this book better. I wasn't surprised by much but I can appreciate the very sensitive subject matter that this book covered.
I would recommend this book.

What a great story!
Revisado: 02-25-24
I got through all three books in under two weeks listening part-time. It's a simple story but the performance takes you there. There was a twist I never saw coming. The performance is excellent! If all of Per Jacobson's stories are as entertaining as this, then he now has a new fan.

Revisado: 02-16-24
This story kept me interested. I finished it in just a couple days, which is very short for me. I can't wait to start Strung II to find out what's causing all of the terror.

Historia
Summer 1995: Ten-year-old Joan, her mother, and her younger sister flee her father’s explosive temper and seek refuge at her mother’s ancestral home in Memphis. This is not the first time violence has altered the course of the family’s trajectory. Half a century earlier, Joan’s grandfather built this majestic house in the historic Black neighborhood of Douglass—only to be lynched days after becoming the first Black detective in the city. Joan tries to settle into her new life, but family secrets cast a longer shadow than any of them expected.

I couldn't appreciate the Memphis accents, but...
Revisado: 02-12-24
The stories were good but I rate it a 3 because the story teller sounded like a white woman trying to sound like a Black southern woman. It really irritated me. The story of Myrion and Jax was really special, especially in the beginning of their relationship so I was a little sad things didn't work out for them. In fact, the stories of all three women, Hazel, Myrion, and August, were a little sad. It seemed they were cursed to never have a lasting true love. I do appreciate that certain moments of the Civil Rights were made part of this book as well as 9/11.
I would say the best part of this story is when August testifies at her son's trial. That portrayal came across very realistic to me and was moving. I was also moved when Hazel and Myron were newly married and Myron made good on his promise to her. The kindness of Mr. Stanley and the wisdom of Ms. Davis added to the book. The cruelty also added another layer to the complex lives these ladies all went through.
I would recommend this book but I think there should be other actors to portray the characters for those of us who would rather listen to it.

Great Whodunit Story
Revisado: 03-04-23
This is storytelling at its best. Very complex in keeping up with each character. A wonderful whodunit! The story starts slow but builds up to several WTF moments! The characters are all believable and their stories are interesting and leave you for more. Definite must read.

Historia
One morning, a man wakes up to find himself transformed. Overnight, Anders’s skin has turned dark, and the reflection in the mirror seems a stranger to him. At first he shares his secret only with Oona, an old friend turned new lover. Soon, reports of similar events begin to surface. Across the land, people are awakening in new incarnations, uncertain how their neighbors, friends, and family will greet them. As the bond between Anders and Oona deepens, change takes on a different shading: a chance at a kind of rebirth—an opportunity to see ourselves, face to face, anew.

Kind of Strange Story
Revisado: 03-04-23
Mohsin's performance was not good. I lost interest in the story and the characters early on because of it. I still do not know why this was made into a story for others to read/listen to. What was the reason for the changes?

Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

AMAZING! WONDERFUL! TRUTHFUL!
Revisado: 05-12-22
Viola Davis is so much more than I thought she was. She shares her story without shame nor hesitation. I had no idea her life was full of so many challenges, especially the ones she felt about herself. As a little girl, I had tremendous self-esteem issues, and after listening to Viola's story, so many of my memories came back but just like Viola I too triumphed over those sad days. Viola's story is for all the Black women who had to grow and find themselves. This book is wonderful.

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

Starts out slow , but
Revisado: 12-13-21
The story started really slow-moving for me. So slow that I stopped listening for a couple of weeks. I got lost a few times trying to fully understand what was going on because I would zone out.
I gave the story another listen and eventually came to really enjoying it. The performance was almost perfect but he kept lowering his voice in certain situations in the story; I will assume it was for effect, however all that did was force me to increase my volume.
The story has humor, drama, and history. It let's you visualize Harlem, NY in ways you may never have thought of before and it got me to a point where I was on the edge of my seat.
I would recommend this listen.

If you think this is another office politics story, you have another thing coming. A brilliant, mind-blowing story and well performed by all. I haven't been taken by surprise like this since The Matrix. A definite must read/listen while on vaca or on the road.

A Good Story
Revisado: 07-21-21
I enjoyed this read. I was impressed with the puzzle of figuring out how Greek lettering and religion combined to finding a secret treasure. The characters were not over the top and believable and the love scenes were steamy. The performance was excellent!! I would recommend this one for a weekend or even a vacation read.
