A judge’s first murder trial. A defense attorney in over his head. A prosecutor out for blood and glory. The accused, who is possibly innocent. And the killer, who may have just committed the perfect crime.

Maybe if I hadn’t listened to this before I listened to The whistler I would have enjoyed it - but after this prequel I have no interest in the next two books. As a courtroom drama it is too packed with tropes of bad trials with absolute minimal character development. It’s a big nothing for me. Not worth spending a credit on unless maybe you’re in love with the series? Deakins voice is deep and rich- I think he did a good job reading.

Historia
Before she even turned 40, Florence Nightingale was the darling of the British public, the heroine of the Crimea. She could have sailed home to England and comfortably lived out her days. Instead she conducted a postmortem on every moment of her wartime service. She sought to broadcast her mistakes so everyone would understand what happens in unsanitary medical facilities. One hundred and fifty years ago, the respect we now have for nurses and the intense training that nurses must undergo was nothing but a seed in Florence Nightingale's imagination.

Unpredictable Narrator

I think the story must be pretty good, but I found the narration upsetting at best. Sudden random and startling inflections and a hurried pace made this book unlistenable for me.
