This book takes a refreshing look at our species from a distance. Yuval asks questions about how and why biological truths about homo sapiens have led to the cultural, historical, and philosophical context we live in today. He encourages us to take a closer look at the stories our cultures tell; to observe them at their roots, understand their implications, and carefully decide what to do with that knowledge. Full of insight and balanced research, and impeccably performed.

I came here for research toward the play and musical of Sweeney Todd; I really enjoyed immersing myself in the language and cadence of speech, although I have to admit the constant vocal fry and downward inflection of the narrator took a LOT of getting used to. highly enjoyable and worthwhile!

Creative Focus to realize practical achievements

I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in a performance field. When I started this book, I didn't realize it would give me perspective and become exactly the inspiration I needed to renew my focus and dig deep. There is real power in this book for anyone trying to learn and achieve high-level abilities, and I highly recommend it, especially to performers and those in creative fields.

McLaughlin draws satisfying and thought-provoking conclusions about both the history and the current state of musical theatre. It's a world divided by the struggle of achieving mass cultural appeal (the business) against innovating artistic expression (the show). Here, Mclaughlin thoughtfully explores the space between the two by focusing on the work of Sondheim, as it developed over the changing cultural landscape of his time.

This book is at its strongest when its scope is wide, when some of its denser ideas are brought to bear on greater trends in musical theatre. These dense ideas are necessary, but sometimes get weighed down in the philosophical language. Be prepared to rewind occasionally if you want to fully absorb this book. Highly recommended to insiders of the art form, especially directors and music directors.
