Historia
The United States of 1797 faced enormous challenges. The father of the new nation, George Washington, left his vice president, John Adams, with relatively little guidance and impossible expectations to meet. Adams was confronted with intense partisan divides, debates over citizenship, fears of political violence, potential for foreign conflict with France and Britain, and a nation unsure that the presidency could even work without Washington at the helm. Making the Presidency is an exploration of the second US presidency, a period critical to the survival of the American republic.

highly detailed... highly boring
Revisado: 12-20-24
The detail in this book is like no other John Adams book I have ever read... outstanding. terrific job. Unfortunately it's all politics. there's no real good nuggets of information regarding John and the presidency etc..
More information about what a weasel Thomas Jefferson truly was. I would have liked to have read more about what brought the two of them together later in life after all of the damage that Thomas Jefferson did to John Adams reputation.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Revisado: 07-23-24
It was almost as if the author had a bunch of short stories about the civil war thrown in his lap and he said let's make some money. let's put this into one big story. what a crock. this book is not worth reading. I've read a lot of civil war, a lot of revolutionary war books. this was not entertaining at all. there was no new information. the information regarding fort Sumter was very good and it should have stated that as the short story, all the other surrounding stuff that meant absolutely nothing to the story could have been cropped out immediately.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Not so entertaining but a view into 10 Downing and retreat of the Churchills.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he'd learned about love and life.

Main char7Lin narration great...Karla sounded like a mix of several characters and did not meet the performance of Shantaram.
Story was weak....now building of the steading to a larger meaning.... Very weak story when compared to Shantaram.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Largely predictable and several lines of the story were assumed but not fully explained. Maybe the actual book would have pushed me to go back and reread parts...

Historia
Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

An honest (I think anyway) account of Henry Winkler's life. he didn't seem to hold back in any aspect, although I would have liked to known more about the characters on Happy Days like Arnold for instance.

Did I learn anything.....
Revisado: 11-01-23
No...not especially.
Stories of soldiers starving almost naked and marching only to leave bloody footprints have been told for now hundreds of years. How this guy made it thru so many campaigns without war injuries fascinating. his chance meeting of Gen. Washington at Yorktown was interesting.
The narrator should not be ready for anyone including the deaf... really awful performance.
