Historia
In Killing Commendatore, a 30-something portrait painter in Tokyo is abandoned by his wife and finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist, Tomohiko Amada. When he discovers a previously unseen painting in the attic, he unintentionally opens a circle of mysterious circumstances. To close it, he must complete a journey that involves a mysterious ringing bell, a two-foot-high physical manifestation of an Idea, a dapper businessman who lives across the valley, a precocious 13-year-old girl, a Nazi assassination attempt during World War II in Vienna.

not his best
Revisado: 03-17-19
if you've read Murakami before, much of this story will seem familiar, too familiar in my opinion. Nothing surprised me. Murakami reuses the same tropes as the Wind Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka by the Shore. Come up with something new!! The dialogue felt stilted, superficial, and unrealistic to me. It felt like I was reading a story that was overly constructed and forced. I never felt immersed in the story. Also, the didn't seemed to be any limitations to the story, neither logical or physical. So it felt like anything could happen, nothing could possibly be surprising, and nothing could be significant. I wanted the book to be over very badly. I couldn't stand listening to it anymore but I was determined to finish it. The characters were one dimensional and not compelling. I usually miss a good character after finishing a book. But here I was happy to say goodbye to all of them. Lastly, behind the story is a subtle and disturbing pedophilia that made me feel uncomfortable. Sometimes even incestual pedophilia. It might be a Japanese thing. but I didn't like it and it detracted from the story.

Historia
Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are lovesick doctors, students, ex-boyfriends, actors, bartenders, and even Kafka’s Gregor Samsa, brought together to tell stories that speak to us all. In Men Without Women, Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic, marked by the same wry humor and pathos that have defined his entire body of work.

I like murakami, really love 1q84 and wind up bird. they are two of my favorite books all time. but this work is a serious flop. there are some interesting stories in it but overall it lacks subtlety and there's a feeling at the end that he tried to force cohesiveness into the series that was unnecessary, particular with the last piece which is by far the worst published story I've read from Murakami. I would read a couple of these stories again but some of them are just so dreadful that I had to give this 1 star, sorry haruki

Historia
The Remains of the Day is a profoundly compelling portrait of the perfect English butler and of his fading, insular world in postwar England. At the end of his three decades of service at Darlington Hall, Stevens embarks on a country drive, during which he looks back over his career to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving "a great gentleman". But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness" and graver doubts about his own faith in the man he served.

probably will need some time to digest this book. it moves slowly and deliberately and the main character is frustrating but in the end it's satisfying

Historia
Information is everything in "Hard-Boiled Wonderland". A specialist encrypter is attacked by thugs with orders from an unknown source, is chased by invisible predators, and dates an insatiably hungry librarian who never puts on weight. In "The End of the World" a new arrival is learning his role as dream-reader. But there is something eerily disquieting about the changeless nature of the town and its fable-like inhabitants. Told in alternate chapters, the two stories converge and combine.

glad I read it but not my favorite murakami read. if you haven't read murakami before I suggest starting with Kafka on the shore or the wind up bird chronical.

great book, and great reading
Revisado: 10-30-16
this is very dfferent from other murakami novels, there's not so much imagination and absurdness to it but the concreteness of it is nice. still I feel it compliments murakamis other work quite well. would recommend to anyone interested in his work.

Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.
