This book was published in 1891 and is a story of a lonely child, Dick Helder, who grows up to become a war artist. Following the British army into battle, he experiences many difficulties and internal struggles while providing some outstanding descriptions of the desert and desert warfare.

Why would you choose an American female to read Kipling, and one who doesn't know how to pronounce "Leicester Square" and "threepenny bit"? Kipling is the quintessential English Public School educated male, so it just seemed amazingly inappropriate and spoiled my enjoyment of of an interesting story.

Depressing

A sad, sordid little book, and not very funny. I was very depressed by the alcoholism and promiscuous sex, and I am a huge Monty Python and Graham Chapman fan. Maybe it is best not to know the truth about people and just accept the brilliance of their work without looking any deeper. (And the audio quality is lousy.)
