Historia
Mesopotamia is the ancient name for the region that is now Iraq, a remarkably advanced civilization that flourished for two-thirds of the time that civilization has existed on Earth. Mesopotamians mastered irrigation agriculture; built the first complex urban societies; developed writing, literature, and law; and united vast regions through warfare and diplomacy. While civilizations like Greece and Rome have an unbroken tradition of written histories, the rich history of Mesopotamia has only been recently rediscovered, thanks to the decipherment of Mesopotamia's cuneiform writing less than 200 years ago.

Professor's tone is distracting
Revisado: 03-06-23
The course itself is fine, but the professor has a bubbly tone that bumps against the content. There's a constant upbeat feeling in the lectures which seems to undercut any understanding of what the ancient Mesopotamian reality might have been like.

Historia
For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Incredible book, giving a comprehensive look at-- among other things-- demographics and how they're going to affect the global economy the next generation.
Author makes the content lively, and he's the perfect narrator for his own jokes and quips.

Historia
The bicycle is a vestige of the Victorian era, seemingly at odds with our age of smartphones and ride-sharing apps and driverless cars. Yet we live on a bicycle planet. Across the world, more people travel by bicycle than any other form of transportation. Almost anyone can learn to ride a bike—and nearly everyone does.

Terrific “history” of the bike. Who knew!
The “rickshaw” section was particularly interesting. Great narration too.

Historia
Here is the remarkable story of how this humble language took vigorous root in Eastern European shtetls and in the Jewish quarters of cities across Europe; how it achieved a rich literary flowering between the wars in Europe and America; how it was rejected by emancipated Jews; and how it fell victim to the Holocaust. And also how, in yet another twist of destiny, Yiddish today is becoming the darling of academia. Yiddish is a history as story; a tale of flesh-and-blood people with manic humor.

Incredible book. Wonderful narration.
Revisado: 08-27-21
This was so surprisingly well-done. Meticulously researched and written like a New Yorker article. Narration infuses the story and the Yiddish words with real heft.

In This Country, Chris Matthews “has written a love letter to his country” (Joy Reid, host of The ReidOut and author of The Man Who Sold America), offering a panoramic portrait of post-World War II America through the story of his remarkable life and career. It is a story of risk and adventure, of self-reliance and service, of loyalty and friendship. It is a story driven by an abiding faith in our country.

After being an avid viewer of Hardball, it was great to learn more about Chris Matthews. And having him narrate the book was extra special. Interesting to see the arc of Matthews' life and how he weaved in and out of Washington and the media world.

Historia
Israel is a tiny state, and yet it has captured the world's attention, aroused its imagination, and, lately, been the object of its opprobrium. Why does such a small country speak to so many global concerns? More pressingly: Why does Israel make the decisions it does? And what lies in its future? We cannot answer these questions until we understand Israel's people and the questions and conflicts, the hopes and desires, that have animated their conversations and actions.

Ernest Hemingway's first new book of fiction since the publication of A Farewell to Arms in 1929 contains 14 stories of varying length. Some of them have appeared in magazines but the majority have not been published before. The characters and backgrounds are widely varied. "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" is about an old Spanish Beggar.

Even having read many of these stories on paper, hearing Stacy Keach read them brought whole new understanding.
His tenor, and the soulfulness of his voice seems to embody Hemingway's mood and themes.

This is a very well-crafted fable performed by a top-notch cast.
Though the drama feels like it's leading you along towards a specific final argument, I still found myself surprised at the end.

Historia
Robert Caro's monumental book makes public what few outsiders knew: that Robert Moses was the single most powerful man of his time in the City and in the State of New York. And in telling the Moses story, Caro both opens up to an unprecedented degree the way in which politics really happens—the way things really get done in America's City Halls and Statehouses—and brings to light a bonanza of vital information about such national figures as Alfred E. Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt (and the genesis of their blood feud), about Fiorello La Guardia, John V. Lindsay and Nelson Rockefeller.

One of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to
Revisado: 06-21-21
Beyond being one of the undisputed best nonfiction books ever, this audiobook is an incredible case of when the narrator and the book itself feel almost inextricable.
Robertson Dean is simply perfect as the voice of this story. He encapsulates the mood and tone of Robert Moses and his empire in the most vivid and characteristic way.

Historia
In Four Lost Cities, acclaimed science journalist Annalee Newitz takes listeners on an entertaining and mind-bending adventure into the deep history of urban life. Investigating across the centuries and around the world, Newitz explores the rise and fall of four ancient cities, each the center of a sophisticated civilization: the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük in Central Turkey, the Roman vacation town of Pompeii in Italy, the medieval megacity of Angkor in Cambodia, and the indigenous metropolis Cahokia, which stood beside the Mississippi River where East St. Louis is today.
