Historia
Profanity has always been a deliciously vibrant part of our lexicon, an integral part of being human. In fact, our ability to curse comes from a different part of the brain than other parts of speech - the urgency with which we say "f--k!" is instead related to the instinct that tells us to flee from danger. Language evolves with time, and so does what we consider profane or unspeakable. Nine Nasty Words is a rollicking examination of profanity, explored from every angle: historical, sociological, political, linguistic.

Historia
Medical Apartheid is the first and only comprehensive history of medical experimentation on African Americans. Starting with the earliest encounters between black Americans and Western medical researchers and the racist pseudoscience that resulted, it details the ways both slaves and freedmen were used in hospitals for experiments conducted without their knowledge - a tradition that continues today within some black populations.

I burst out crying when the book finished. I could fully verbalize why. The depth of impact this book has had on my perspective as a grad student in acupuncture is immeasurable. We discussed a research study this week where this book was incredibly relevant. It needs to be required reading for researchers, medical professionals and IRB boards. I plan to follow this up with everything else by her. She is an incredible author and has my utmost respect for her thoroughness as a researcher, specificity, explanation for the lay person and detail. How she clarifies what others miss and what impact specific historical events in research have had. I will likely listen to it again to ensure I absorbed and remember every word. Thank you for this incredible contribution.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

What a book! I laughed, I cried, I felt everything and damn could you feel the love he has for these characters. They have been through so much! I was introduced to it by my partner and caught up to finish the last book with him. I highly recommend it. Thank you for the experience. It was so vivid I saw everything clearly in my mind. Never too verbose, great comedic timing, great pacing,.. i just can't believe its over.

Historia
Fat is an obsession, a dirty word, a subject of national handwringing - and, according to biochemist Sylvia Tara, the least understood part of our body. You may not love your fat, but your body certainly does. In fact your body is actually endowed with many self-defense measures to hold on to fat. For example, fat can use stem cells to regenerate; increase our appetite if it feels threatened; and use bacteria, genetics, and viruses to expand itself. The secret to losing 20 pounds? You have to work with your fat, not against it.
