Historia
On the shores of a tranquil fjord in northern Iceland, a man is brutally beaten to death on a bright summer's night. As the 24-hour light of the arctic summer is transformed into darkness by an ash cloud from a recent volcanic eruption, a young reporter leaves Reykajvik to investigate on her own, unaware that an innocent person's life hangs in the balance. Ari Thor Arason and his colleagues on the tiny police force in Siglufjordur struggle with an increasingly perplexing case, while their own serious personal problems push them to the limit.

As always, Ragnar Jonasson weaves a fascinating tale while providing insights into Icelandic culture and diving deep into the psychological makeup of each character. I’m on to his next one in the series.

I really enjoyed hearing what the author had to say about how he writes, his inspirations and even what is to come in future works - the interviewer asked some of the same questions I would have asked! This was a great 10 minutes - only wish I could keep listening.

Historia
Early one morning on the shore of the Thames, DCI Samuel Owusu is called to the scene of a gruesome discovery. When Owusu sends the evidence for examination, he learns the bones are connected to a cold case that left three people dead on the kitchen floor in a Chelsea mansion thirty years ago. Rachel Rimmer has also received a shock—her husband, Michael, has been found dead in the cellar of his house in France. All signs point to an intruder, and the French police need her to come urgently to answer questions about Michael and his past that she very much doesn’t want to answer.

So much fun - a follow up to The Family Upstairs
Revisado: 12-27-23
If you read The Family Upstairs, you MUST read this afterwards! It is a wonderful continuation and satisfying conclusion, answering all the questions that remain after the first book. It’s terrific, and of course as well-voiced as the first book also.

Historia
Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge. Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students?

Historia
For years, Gary Gulman had been the comedian’s comedian, acclaimed for his delight in language and his bracing honesty. But after two stints in a psych ward, he found himself back in his mother’s house in Boston—living in his childhood bedroom at age forty-six, as he struggled to regain his mental health. That’s where Misfit begins. Then it goes way back. This is no ordinary book about growing older and growing up. Gulman has an astonishing memory and takes the listener through every year of his childhood education, with detailed stories that are in turn alarming and riotously funny.

Listen right now! So good
Revisado: 10-02-23
This memoir is funny, sad, heartwarming and entertaining. I have no notes. Also, it’s read by Gary himself, so the audible feels like an extension of his standup in a way. He is an expert storyteller - I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. It was a joy to listen to, and I’m so sad it’s over! Eagerly awaiting the sequel.

Historia
In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

Overall, I loved it. It’s slow but worth it
Revisado: 08-28-23
This is a beautifully written work of historical fiction. I can see how much research went into it, and I love the character development and intricate philosophical reflections on life, the human psyche, and society. It is a lovely meandering story with many interesting and unexpected developments. And yet…I don’t want to give spoilers so let me just say…it was frustrating that the main character didn’t ever get completely satisfied in ways that she so desperately craved. I really wanted this for her.
Also I should say that if you like fast-paced storytelling this might not be for you. If you like to take your time and luxuriate in lovely prose as a story slowly unfolds, then I recommend this book.

Historia
It all begins with a hot-air-balloon trip and three bottles of champagne. Allan and Julius are ready for some spectacular views, but they’re not expecting to land in the sea and be rescued by a North Korean ship, and they could never have imagined the captain of the ship would be harboring a suitcase full of contraband uranium on a nuclear-weapons mission for Kim Jong-un. Yikes! Soon Allan and Julius are at the center of a complex diplomatic crisis involving world figures from the Swedish foreign minister to Angela Merkel and President Trump.

Terrible Narration ruins the book
Revisado: 05-28-23
I can’t finish the book because of the terrible narration. I just can’t stomach it anymore. The hoarse voice of Allan was bad enough, but the foreign accents are just really awful, unnecessary and offensive. What happened to the narrator of the first book? He was fabulous.

Historia
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.
