Really Nice Holiday Story
Revisado: 01-02-23
This is one of my favorite holiday reads, and to me, it's one of this authors best. It's a nice story about redemption and forgiveness, with a bit of romance and holiday joy. Really good, unique plot. I enjoy the characters, although admittedly, Nick can seem to good to be true at times. That's probably my only minor critique.
The narrator did a pretty good job. I didn't like the way she made the characters "yell," but otherwise, it was a solid performance. I've listened to several stories from this narrator, and although this is probably not her best work, she still does a good job. January Lavoy is always solid. She's one of my favorite narrators.

The holidays are swiftly approaching when the Goss family suddenly faces a life-or-death crisis. Setting their differences aside to come together to weather the storm is easier said than done, and the last thing the family needs right now is to add a little, lost puppy into mix. Sometimes, though, the most priceless holiday gifts are the unexpected. And the key to setting things right might just come in the smallest, scrappiest of packages.

Nice Story
Revisado: 12-22-22
I realize I only have this 3 stars, but I did enjoy it. There are a couple of reasons I didn't rate it higher:
**VERY mild spoilers ahead**
1) This was written a bit differently than a typical W Bruce Cameron book. It's a bit heavier, first of all--tackling complex family dynamics and grief. There was also MUCH less emphasis on the dogs in the story--in fact, we don't even meet one of them until midway through. It was still well written, but it was different. And, while I did appreciate the human interest and family dynamics, I often found myself thinking, "Where are the DOGS in 'A DOG'S Christmas?!?'"
2) This wasn't much of a Christmas story. Although it happened at Christmastime, and ended on Christmas Day, there wasn't really that much Christmas content. I wanted a Christmas story--not just a story that happens at Christmas.
Overall, this was a good story and I did enjoy it. It just didn't really ring the Christmas bell or doggie fix for me.

Great Story
Revisado: 03-18-22
Awesome story. This author has another series about the same "Borna Virus LX," and Eric is the brother of the main character in that series. I love her other series (Until the End of the World), so it's great to hear this one. Terrific story, genuine characters, and just the right amount of zombies and romance. This author is one of my favorites.
My only teeny tiny complaint is the grading way the characters will sometimes speak for one another: for instance, Eric says, "Sylvie's pissed." It happened often enough that it stuck out.
Narrator's good, although sometimes her inflections irritate a bit. It's hard to describe what about it irritates, though, so that may just be me. I do love her range and accents, though. She's great at making everyone sound different, so I'd know who was talking, even if the author didn't specify.
Overall, TERRIFIC start to another terrific series!

Misinformation From Abroad
Revisado: 03-16-22
I was at first, excited to listen to what I thought were Black Americans discussing politics. I was very surprised to find out that these folks are in South Africa, yet are discussing American politics. And clearly, more research is needed. I only listened to part of the episode about Covid, so maybe they swerve back into their lane on another topic. I could only stomach about 15 mins of that discussion (and that's after fast forwarding through a song they played 🙄). It's weird and horrible, listening to people from ANOTHER COUNTRY regurgitate American right wing conspiracy theories. They got their "information" from Alex Jones. Need I say more? HARD PASS.

Great Story, but DRAGS
Revisado: 07-12-21
I'll start by saying that I love Nora Roberts books. And I actually read this book awhile back, so when it went on sale, I got it, thinking I'd surely love the audiobook...
Well, I'm sorry to say that it was just ok.
First, the narrator REALLY misses as the voice of a girl child. Yikes. That really screws up the first portion of the book, as it starts with the protagonist as a little girl. Seriously, it's hard to listen to. Funny, because I've heard this narrator before and she did ok on another book as the voice of a MALE child. *shrug*
The other thing is the pacing slows WAAAYYY down towards the end. I swear, I could have easily chopped an hour off the end of this book.
Other than all that, a nice read. Great storyline, well developed characters, and beside the child voices, decent narration. An enjoyable walk down memory lane of one my fave author's earlier books.

I Loved It...Right Up Until the End
Revisado: 12-16-20
First, let me say the narrator was terrific. He nailed every accent and his timing and pitch was perfect. I'll begin my review of the book by saying I'm a huge Grisham fan, in large part because of the Time to Kill series. They're always entertaining and fascinating, and this one was no exception. The characters were multidimensional and interesting. The story grabbed me right from the start-- absolutely riveting. Where this fell short was the ending. It felt tacked on, rushed, and--worst of all--incomplete. It seemed like a timer went off and Grisham said to himself, "That's it! Done!" I have no idea whether there will be another entry in this series. It feels like there should be, but with the way this book wrapped up, I'm left with no clue at ALL. I'm disappointed. I still gave it 4 starts because right up until literally the last 45 mins or so, it was TERRIFIC, and I was enjoying it immensely.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 09-26-19
This was a pretty good book. I didn't hate it--in fact, I quite enjoyed the overall story. But the book does drag in places, and a couple of times I found myself wondering when it would end. It was worth the listen--I believe I came across it in an Audible sale (a First-in-the-Series Sale). It was worth the $5, but I probably wouldn't have been happy losing a credit for this title. I did enjoy it well enough, however. The overall plot was a good one (I enjoy apocalyptic-type stories), but at times, things were just a little too fantastic and unbelievable. And while I enjoyed it enough not to want to return it, I did not enjoy it enough to continue the series. That's not meant to disparage the author or the narrators--who, by the way, were TERRIFIC--the book just wasn't for me.

One of My Favorites
Revisado: 07-03-19
I adore this book. I listened to it on cd several years ago, and I've never forgotten it, so it was with pleasure that I used a credit to own it. It's so well-written and such a wonderfully different Christian story. I wish it had ended a bit differently, but that's not to say that the ending was poorly done. That's just me, wanting the story to end in a different way. I don't think Victoria Christopher Murray got enough kudos for this book. It's layered in a way that I realize after listening to it again that I missed some things the first time I "read" it. It's a truly excellent read, and a cautionary tale worth heeding.
My only critique is that there is no sequel that's sort of hinted at in the end!

Very Pleasantly Surprised
Revisado: 06-12-19
I have to be honest, I'm not a big fan of alien invasion stories. However, I AM a fan of apocalypse type stories, and I adore Julia Whelan's narration. That's what prompted me to purchase this title. Still, I went in preparing to have to return it. I was very pleasantly surprised. The story grabbed me and held me from the start. Amy is written as a very typical snotty teen, but impressive nonetheless. I like this, because as a reader, one can't help but wonder, "If this had happened to me, what would I have done?" Even as an adult, let alone a teenager.
And again, Julia Whelan's narration is EVERYTHING.
This was a real "page-turner" (had I been turning pages, anyway). Usually I just listen to books while I drive around for errands and while I cook. This book had me listening every chance I got--in the morning, during lunch, at night before bed. I LOVED it. I even had a bit of a nightmare about it (and I say this with glee)!
Only one little speed bump: The transition in part three where we go from strictly present to back-and-forth present to future is clumsy and was confusing initially.
Overall, it was excellent. Any book that creeps into my dreams is a keeper.
