Wonderful Series
Revisado: 01-06-25
I absolutely love this series and have fallen in love with the characters. But I cannot stress enough how terribly disappointed I am in the change of narrators. Frank now sounds like some gruff theatrical old radio show and it has changed his entire personality.

Ruined by narration
Revisado: 08-17-24
The story and mystery were superb as every Ian Rutledge book has been. Interesting to get a glimpse of everyone before the war.
Having said that, the choice of narrator for this flashback completely missed the mark in my opinion. Very difficult to distinguish different characters, everyone sounded like they were 80 years old and the attempt at female voices was painful.
But, I am dedicated to finishing this series and not missing anything, so I persevered.
These books have such depth, such excellent mysteries and the detail in the history of the war and lives in the period were enlightening and heart wrenching for me. Main characters are strong, with integrity, people you can like and cheer for, wish you knew in life.
This series is best listened to from Book 1 in order.

Great mystery
Revisado: 07-03-24
Second in series and another fine mystery. Enjoy the characters. No disrespect, but I do wish they would change narrators. Book is filled with serious subjects of war and murder and narrator is theatrical and perhaps better suited to something less serious.

Compelling Mystery
Revisado: 04-14-24
I lack the words to properly review this. Haunting and sad in some ways, filled with the hardships of WWI. Examples of the goodness of some and the truly evil of others. The narration was perfect, so emotion filled at times without being theatrical as so many seem to be. I simply could not stop listening and lost a bit of sleep listening to the stories of the cousins, the mystery. Who was Grandfather, the man? I found it touching and believable … many have family secrets held for years. This book is full of them.

Historia
September 1878. One night, as the pleasure boat The Princess Alice makes her daily trip up the Thames, she collides with the Bywell Castle, a huge iron-hulled collier. The Princess Alice shears apart, throwing all 600 passengers into the river; only 130 survive. It is the worst maritime disaster London has ever seen, and early clues point to sabotage by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, who believe violence is the path to restoring Irish Home Rule. For Scotland Yard Inspector Michael Corravan, born in Ireland and adopted by the Irish Doyle family, the case presents a challenge.

Change of narrators
Revisado: 07-09-23
Well, I thought I had found a new series. Narration in second book lost all depth of character and personality. Reads too fast, voice too high, makes Inspector Corravan sound like an idiot. Returning book without finishing.

Historia
London, 1878. One April morning, a small boat bearing a young woman’s corpse floats down the murky waters of the Thames. When the victim is identified as Rose Albert, daughter of a prominent judge, the Scotland Yard director gives the case to Michael Corravan, one of the only senior inspectors remaining after a corruption scandal the previous autumn left the division in ruins. Reluctantly, Corravan abandons his ongoing case, a search for the missing wife of a shipping magnate, handing it over to his young colleague, Mr. Stiles.

Revisado: 07-09-23
Well written historical mystery. Interesting to the end. Narrator was exceptionally good choice for this book. VERY disappointed that a different narrator was chosen for second book. Not impressed w/sampling of that, but want to follow the Inspector’s story so will try it.

I'm hitting the road." Thought provoking
Revisado: 07-02-23
I found this to be a very personal and thought-provoking story. Having previous experience as a nurse, so many stories are different from what I would choose for myself. I applaud all of them for creating their own beautiful ending.
I’m sure there are many books Mr. Grove’s narration would be suited for, I did not find this to be one of them.

Intriguing mysteries with wonderful characters
Revisado: 06-11-23
Book 7 has been perhaps my favorite of the series so far. The possibility of a love interest and improved financial circumstances for Maisie were uplifting.
When I first began the series, the first couple of books left me with somewhat of a heavy heart. The author has a gift for describing the people in time of war, the tragedies, the circumstances. It’s obvious she has done much research and the details are so emotional and educational.
As I continue through this series, and of course, I’m committed to the very last book now, I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Maisie, and several of the other characters. She is strong and determined, but has such a soft, emotional side, and even though you feel her grief, she never plays the victim, but goes about her life quietly helping people.
You simply must begin with book one so that you can feel the history and know the backstory of the characters.
The mysteries in each book are excellent and I’ve seldom been able to determine “who did it” until disclosed.
Narration is absolute perfection, and I probably would have to quit listening if they changed narrators in the middle of the series as some are prone to do.
My thanks to Ms. Winspear and Ms. Cassidy for providing hours, and hours of thought-provoking listening.

Sweet romance with a bit of mystery
Revisado: 03-18-23
Sweet story w/HEA and a couple of ghosts and a mystery. This really is more suited for young adults, in my opinion. Very sweet, prim and proper. A “clean” story that would be appropriate for our young daughters with a hint of faith. Very suitable for Christian readers. Excellent narration.
