Historia
Everyone's favorite houseguest who never left, Leon Black (played by award-winning comedian JB Smoove from HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm), drops his wisdom and good-bad advice for the masses. Learn the secrets Larry David has gleaned from the Falstaff of television. Be forewarned: in opening this audiobook and Leon's mind, you need to be prepared for straight talk. The kind of unfiltered blunt straight talk that pounds on your door, invites itself in, makes itself at home, and helps itself to your food, your security pass code, and your expensive organic beet juice.

Not very funny, even less useful
Revisado: 05-09-24
Leon Black needs a Larry David to play the straight man. without it we're left with this rambling mess that doesn't really hit any marks. he tries to be ribald & PC at the same time, and the "wisdom" tries to bestow is always impractical & usually unfunny

Historia
As much music history as biography, Awop Bop Aloo Mop celebrates "Little" Richard Wayne Penniman, who burst onto the American scene in 1955 with his mega-hit "Tutti Frutti." Almost by himself, Little Richard wrote the anti-rules and poured the concrete for the foundation of a new musical art form he created. Alan Freed would call it "Rock & Roll." Dubbing himself "The Architect of Rock & Roll," Little Richard was known for his wild, flamboyant performances and outrageous costumes. He also had demons he struggled with throughout his career.

I very much appreciated that Richards antics did not overshadow his art, as it so often does in reviews & reports about him. The author was clearly invested without being bias. One of the better biographies I've read!

Historia
In this riveting book - part memoir, part history - Leeds weaves a wholly new and remarkable portrait of Brown as an idiosyncratic iconoclast, determined artist, and forceful businessman. It is a rare look into a world little known to White America immediately following the Civil Rights Movement. Leeds discovers that Brown is a fascinatingly complex man, and their experiences, both business and personal, range from emotional to humorous. All the while, they navigate the complicated world of popular Black music in America, told by someone who actually lived it.

Best JB book I've ever read (out of 5)
Revisado: 11-26-20
The best thing about this book, to me, is that Alan never tries to paint James with his own brush. It seems like a straightforward account of the Godfather that centers all the other myths, exaggerations and disparities that surround Browns legacy. Of equal note is that, while few are as qualified to include themselves in books they write about others, Alan Leads takes a backseat in his own story. Great book and the stories about James Browns phobia of bad teeth are hilarious!

What drives the Man Without Fear? Matt Murdock was raised by a single father, an over-the-hill prizefighter with one last chance to make good - a chance that cost him his life. Taunted and tormented by other children, Matt's life was irrevocably altered after he was blinded by radioactive materials while saving the life of an old man. The payoff? An unbreakable will and a keen intelligence, helping focus the super-senses with which he was blessed during the accident. His story is one of love, pain, disappointment, and strength.

This is the classic biography of reggae legend Bob Marley, updated and revised for the twenty-fifth anniversary of his death. Bob Marley left an indelible mark on modern music, both as a reggae pioneer and as an enduring cultural icon. Catch a Fire, now a classic rock biography, delves into the life of this man, the leader of a musical and spiritual revolution that continues today. The book chronicles Marley's life and career, as well as the milieu that shaped his spiritual and political beliefs.

Perhaps the best biography I've ever read
Revisado: 05-03-18
This is one of the two best bios I've ever read, the other being "when giants walked the earth" by mick wall (about led zeppelin). Reason being, they both read like stories as opposed to day to day followings or extended reviews of the music (though, admittedly, I felt as though the records themselves could've been given more attention and live performances are barely covered). When the book discussed Marley's youth, I saw him as any other Jamaican boy and not the superstar he would become, he was the main character in a story and not the subject of a report as is often the case with biographies. Again, the music aspect of Marley could've received more attention, and while I personally appreciated the lengthy portions on Garvey & Emperor Haile Selassie (I am Jamaican and know little about these essential figures as my parents were christians and didn't teach me about them) I could see how it could be annoying for a less interested person, hence the four stars, but i was amazed by this book! And I can't say whether it is 100% accurate, but if they used it in court there must be something to it!

Historia
The story behind the making of the album that signaled the descent of Sylvester Sly Stone Stewart into a haze of drug addiction and delirium is captivating enough for the cinema. In the spacious attic of a Beverly Hills mansion belonging to John and Michelle Phillips (of the Mamas and the Papas), during the fall of 1970, Sly Stone began recording his follow-up to 1969's Stand!, the most popular album of his band's career.

A study of Sly before, during & after Riot
Revisado: 02-21-18
What made the experience of listening to Sly and the Family Stone's 'There's a Riot Goin' On' (33 1/3 Series) the most enjoyable?
The fact that Sly's entire discography pre and post (to a lesser degree) "There's A Riot Goin' On" is covered. Since there is so little literature on Sly, this is a treat. I like how the author links Sly Stone to hip hop & black music in general, something I wasn't fully aware of although I am a consumer & creator of rap music.
What did you like best about this story?
The total analysis of Sly's impact and career
What does Bill Quinn bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Very good author. Clear and delivers passionately enough to retain ones attention
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The whole thing really
Any additional comments?
Intro was a bit long winded, and ending was abrupt, otherwise flawless

Historia
Ben Greenman, New York Times best-selling author, contributing writer to The New Yorker, and owner of thousands of recordings of Prince and Prince-related songs, knows intimately that there has never been a rock star as vibrant, mercurial, willfully contrary, experimental, or prolific as Prince. Uniting a diverse audience while remaining singularly himself, Prince was a tireless artist, a musical virtuoso and chameleon, and a pop-culture prophet.

Reads like a indepth career review & analysis
Revisado: 05-18-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, if they were interested in Prince on an analytical level the way I am. It covers all bases and does so passionately but objectively
What other book might you compare Dig If You Will the Picture to and why?
Prince by Ronin Ro comes closest, but that's due to subject.
What does Peter Berkrot bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He was a good reader, no complaints from me. He didn't "bring it to life" but it's not that kind of book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me reflective and helped me realize how much Prince impacted me and pop culture in general
Any additional comments?
My only gripe with this book is that it labels Prince homophobic when in both instances he was completely objective and not at all insulting to gays. He didn't want to collab with MJ and the bible does say S&G was destroyed for homosexuality, it doesn't make Prince phobic for pointing that out anymore than it makes one racist for reading Uncle Toms Cabin. If you're looking for a tell-all gossip laden book or chronological bio this isn't it, but it incorporates enough of both elements to make it a great all around read. Lastly, you can tell the guy loves Prince, but rather than a love that blinds him to the negative truths about Prince, it's a love that makes him seek for the truth however unfortunate.

Historia
Amid rising gang violence, the crack epidemic, and police brutality, a group of unlikely voices cut through the chaos of late 1980s Los Angeles: N.W.A. Led by a drug dealer, a glammed-up producer, and a high school kid, N.W.A. gave voice to disenfranchised African Americans across the country. And they quickly redefined pop culture across the world. Their names remain as popular as ever: Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube. Dre soon joined forces with Suge Knight to create the combustible Death Row Records.

Excellent, rap needs more of these!
Revisado: 11-28-16
Would you listen to Original Gangstas again? Why?
Yes I would, there was so much information to absorb, but it was never overbearing. History and facts are abundant
Who was your favorite character and why?
Eazy-E was my first favorite rapper so I suppose you could say he was! Wish there was more on him but Ben did an excellent job of covering him.
Which character – as performed by JD Jackson – was your favorite?
JD did a great job with the reading and I feel like his portrayal of Ice T was the most convincing
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Sure, but I'd probably take breaks to listen to the music the book talks about
Any additional comments?
The only criticism I could levy against this book is that it sometimes jumps ahead of itself, talking about things before they happen (in the context of the book) but otherwise this was a fantastic read and I am most impressed by the writers ability to tie in so many different characters so flawlessly! I've purchased 54 books on audible & this may be the best one yet!

More than 30 years after disbanding in 1980, Led Zeppelin continues to be celebrated for its artistic achievements, broad musical influence, and commercial success. Indepth and well deserved review of Page and his m
Revisado: 09-10-16
If you could sum up Light & Shade in three words, what would they be?
Informative and expansive
What other book might you compare Light & Shade to and why?
Probably the 33 1/3 series' album books, very comprehensive and music centered
Have you listened to any of Robert Fass and John Lee ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not, but they did a great job here
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not necessarily. The book is very info based so some pacing is recommended
Any additional comments?
Good book for those more interested in Page for his music then for the occult or groupie stuff

They were the last great band of the '60s and the first great band of the '70s. They rose, somewhat unpromisingly, from the ashes of the Yardbirds to become one of the biggest-selling rock bands of all time - and eventually paid the price for it, with disaster, drug addiction, and death.

Fantastic
Revisado: 09-10-16
What made the experience of listening to When Giants Walked the Earth the most enjoyable?
The detail and balance. I love that the book gives as much focus on the landmark albums (IV, Physical Graffiti) as it does to their latter works (Song Remains The Same, Presence). I also loved the balance between the music and their personal lives, the only biography I've read that focus' more on the music than the personal lives of the people who made it, but I think that's owed to their reluctance to reveal themselves to the press in their heyday. Also, I loved the fictional soliloquies. Some hate them, but to me they offered great insight and helped move the story along and explain things quickly and efficiently.
What other book might you compare When Giants Walked the Earth to and why?
Perhaps Stephen Davis' bio on Jim Morrison, because of it's attention to music and in that it updates and improves the previous bios (No One Here Gets Out Alive for Morrison & Hammer of the Gods by Led Zeppelin)
What does Simon Vance bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He speaks clearly and doesn't get in the way of the material, good job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, didn't have the time but would love to one day
Any additional comments?
I think the only points of contention one could possibly have is with the soliloquies and the British slang, but I appreciated them and it's a british book about a british band written in britain by a british author so you get what you pay for lol
