I'd have to call this book okay. I can't say I'd recommend it to dragon lovers unless you prefer they behave more like animals than sapient beings. The more I write the more I realize there was nothing particularly good I liked, just things ranging from neutral to bad.

Spoilers ahead.

I almost dropped it in the first chapter as it depicted dragons as basically talking violent beasts and I'm more interested in stories where they're a bit wiser than that. After getting through that, I hoped the character would have some kind of arc where he learns to be less of an animal. He sort of did, but really it was less him learning and more he just suddenly was. The reason I had to dock points from the story is because his characterization is all over the place.

The first scene we see of him he kills his brother and feels great about it. He plans to kill his other brother. Then he suddenly has fierce loyalty to his family? He kills children and thinks nothing of the act, and never did even after his arc was done, but he's also fiercely loyal to those he considers friendly? How do you have both empathy and sorrow but also no remorse? I couldn't wrap my head around his motives or thoughts, and I can't recall the last time I've seen a protagnonist behave so blatantly evil and get treated well for it. I could go on, but his characterization I think was the worst part of the story. The world building was fine, some characters were okay.

The most tragic part of the whole book was the ancient dragon, who was honestly the only character I felt anything for. He was probably the most deserving of all the characters of happiness and everything about him was miserable right up to his brutal end.

The ending was wrapped up rather quickly. Very few things were resolved or paid off. Perhaps it's how dragons are supposed to be in this universe, but his sudden strong love and mating was also weirdly rushed and forced. They had nothing in common and spoke very little. He never visited his old wolf pack's offspring, barely acknowledged the elf that freed him and certainly didn't speak to her again after his dragon mission, he didn't go gather up all the important lore he left behind to teach his offspring, and he didn't find out what happened to the one friend he made on the dragon island. Perhaps they're covered in sequels, I can't say, but you shouldn't leave so many open-ended events unresolved in the book they come up in.

I went in a little skeptical since the way the first book ended left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, but coincidentally several of my concerns with that were addressed in this book. Trying not to spoil it by being vague: Raz was punished severely for being right and made to feel wrong for it.

Overall I'm happy with this book and it has me looking forward to the rest of the series. Some characters are a bit shallow, but the main ones get fleshed out more, alongside some more important world-building. I got some real life laughter and tears out of several scenes. The VA continues to do a wonderful job as well. If you like dragon-focused content, and adult content even though that isn't the main focus, you'll probably enjoy this series as it goes. The sex scenes are just a natural part of the story.

Spoilers ahead. Go listen before reading the rest of this.

I was really hoping it wouldn't be book one again but with a different color prince, and I wasn't disappointed. The fact the prince couldn't be affected by pheromones due to his injury was immediately interesting. It meant every experience he had with Elara would be genuine. It's also a powerful trait for a thinker to have, as it means his animalistic draconic instincts are far more dulled, allowing his mind to shine brighter.

It was really refreshing to get more information on Elara as well. As I mentioned, the way she broke Raz's heart in book one and made him feel awful for being in the right just made me dislike her and made the ending unsatisfying. It was good to see her reflect on her actions and explain her situation. Although I was hoping Zargris would solve the mystery of her origin all on his own, he at least wasn't as surprised by the revelation, and was questioning things leading up to that point. By the time Elara had finished her mini arc in this book, I was back on her side and hope she apologizes to Raz when she sees him again.

I wasn't the biggest fan of either queen, and that might have been the point. The dawn kingdom had an apathetic emotional nympho, and the dusk kingdom had a calculating psychotic narcissist. Their end was probably the only good outcome for the kingdom as a whole, even though the dawn queen might have been capable of a redemption arc. I think the dusk queen was praised too highly. Despite her kingdom being clean and well-maintained, on a micro scale we saw how she handled all personal relationships, and that's highly likely how she handles everyone in her life: harshly and cruelly. Just because things are clean and functional doesn't mean they're good. As a quick aside, it was great to see an ancient dragon treated as if he gained wisdom over the years instead of just being huge.

Zargris making up with his sister was delightful. Learning to love their scars as reminders of how far they've come was also nicely done. Those who have dealt with pain are often the most empathetic, and in turn they'll both be great leaders in their own respects. I can only hope the overall arc of the world is Elara working with at least a few other princes of the realms to help push the world towards a better future for all of them.

Speaking of which, I'll end my review with I'm very much looking forward what will certainly be a gratifying spicy threeway... rulership.

Thanks for the fun tongue in cheek story arc. I was glad a lot of the setups eventually paid off. While mostly satire and humorous, there were also moments played straight that got me to tear up. I appreciate that. As a dragon lover, it's hard to find good dragon novels.

I've gone through the entire series three times by this point, and book 9 is by far my favorite of the bunch. I've gone through this one in particular seven or so times. Chapter 3 is my favorite chapter of the series. Anyway, I don't need to write a long review for this series. It's simple: if you like dragons, buy it. You won't regret it.

I went in pretty skeptical, as I do with most titles, and was pleasantly surprised to find an enjoyable book. The sex and flirting, while fun, isn't the main focus of the story, it's just a part of the world. I didn't enjoy the ending as much, as there were many things the protagonist could have or should have said or asked. It was clear it was designed with a specific outcome in mind which was sort of forced into place, but it wasn't enough to ruin my experience. The characters were all enjoyable in their own ways, and it was refreshing to see some that felt initially one-note evolve into something complex. The dragons also behave like dragons, which is also something that doesn't usually happen in dragon books. Anyway, pick this up if you like dragon stories and dragon sex.
