Historia
A violent storm washes a mysterious house onto a rural Pacific Northwest beach, stopping the heart of the only woman who knows what it means. Her grandson, Simon Culpepper, vanishes in the aftermath, leaving two of his childhood friends to comb the small, isolated island for answers—but decades have passed since Melissa and Leo were close if they were ever close at all. Now they'll have to put aside old rivalries and grudges if they want to find or save the man who brought them together in the first place—and on the way they'll learn a great deal about the sinister house on the beach.

Good premise, weak execution
Revisado: 11-13-24
Good premise. Too much build up, followed by an info dump that wasn't very convincing, decent character backgrounds followed by little growth and tedious bickering.

One clue in particular hints that Edward Hyde, her father's former friend and a murderer, may be nearby, and there is a reward for information leading to his capture...a reward that would solve all of her immediate financial woes. But her hunt leads her to Hyde's daughter, Diana, a feral child left to be raised by nuns.

Surprisingly dull
Revisado: 11-03-17
This would have been an easy listen, if the story or the characters had been more engaging. There are some really cool ideas, however the characters are too thin to bring the subject matter to life. The writing style was too light without actually being funny to give the plot any heft or meaning. Each monster is essentially a stereotype, a reference to a famous monster, that seems cool to meet at first, but then is never fully developed. Disappointing.

Please, no more letters.
Revisado: 01-17-17
The book made me want to scream every time you have to listen to the amnesiac main character read a letter she wrote herself before she lost her memory. This trope almost completely undermines the benefit of the main character having lost her memory, and these sections on the audiobook were dull.
Besides the letters, many characters will drone on and on when nothing is really happening. Usually right after some revelation leaving you screaming at the character to get to the damn point already.
Fortunately, it also had a cube of flesh made out of people as a superweapon. When the author stops being far too fascinated by his own twisted world to actually tell a story, he does a good job.
This doesn't happen often enough to recommend.

Too airy
Revisado: 07-03-16
I listened to the whole thing. Liked the premise and the writing style was solid. But I found the main character's struggle hard to identify with, the worldbuilding full of holes, and the plot predictable. Despite monsters made of teeth, the main conflict has none. There are no real consequences or stakes. I was especially irritated that (Spoilers) nearly everyone who dies or is believed to be dead turns out not to be.
