Narrator ruins the story as an audiobook
Revisado: 02-21-17
The narrator reminded me of an elderly preschool teacher. She spoke so slowly it was grinding. She also read without much expression and was pretty awful with accents as well, turning most of them into a monotone. Like other reviewers, I found this narration made it difficult to listen to the entire book.
The story was interesting though.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 12-05-16
When I first heard of this book, I was a little surprised because I knew the author was a white woman and how would she know how black people think? I think she did an excellent job with this book. However this is from the perspective of another white person. All that said I love the story and the narrative and the resolution

Held my attention though the less than scenic parts and even the expansive vistas of the 1000 plus mile drive from Denver to Spokane. In fact had to dawdle around at my destination to hear the ending!

He said, she said, I said.
Revisado: 02-04-16
For me, the story didn't flow well. Lots of jumping around in time which may have been easier to follow in print, but a little tricky with a narrator. Also excessive use of the before mentioned he said, she said, which the narrator overly emphasized.

Not Loving a main character
Revisado: 01-11-16
There were so many times throughout this book I found myself verbalizing out loud to Adrienne to stay away from Will, her love interest and run, not walk away from him and his 30-year-old pettiness.

This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Had a little trouble with suspension of disbelief.
Revisado: 12-27-15
Let me preface this review by saying I am a medical professional, so my take on this book is obviously colored by my experiences and expertise. Overall, I really liked this book but found certain elements hard to swallow; most specifically Andy the orthopedic physician who continued to treat his friend for self inflicted wounds without at the very least getting a 72 hour mental health hold placed. In real life, Andy could and would be in danger of loosing his license for not following through on this. Also had a hard time accepting the fact that Jude would be released from any in-patient psychiatric facility after a drastic suicide attempt just because he failed to corporate with his therapist. That part would have bought him more time, not a ticket out.
But....I did like the characters (although I do agree with other reviewers that Willem was a bit too saint-like) and the way the story was laid out in bits and pieces throughout the novel.
IMHO, the end dragged, the novel could have ended quite a bit sooner without any loss of substance to the story.

Loved it, funny and real
Revisado: 12-27-15
Like the author, at one time I lived in the same are as the fictional town of Wendover, so I know how different it is to move into a place steeped with history and tradition and be on the outside. I loved Hildy, so funny but still a real person with her struggles.
A very entertaining story, the narrator was perfect!

New York Times best-selling poet and multiplatinum singer-songwriter Jewel explores her unconventional upbringing and extraordinary life in an inspirational memoir that covers her childhood, rise to fame, marriage, and motherhood. She writes beautifully about growing up amid the natural wonders of Alaska, about pain and childhood trauma, and about discovering her own identity years after the entire world had discovered the beauty of her songs.

Beautifully written memoir
Revisado: 10-23-15
A worthwhile listen for anyone who appreciates how artists develop and what is behind their lyrics. This book was probably cathartic for Jewel to write; she has a lot of baggage from her upbringing, from both her father and her mother. Although I sometimes wanted to smack her mother upside the head ( what was that woman thinking???), Jewel was quite a bit more generous in her description of her. The writing is insightful and very articulate. The only negative is that towards the end, Jewel waxes a bit heavily on the philosophical nature of her life and life in general which might have been better left inside her journals.

Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Meh
Revisado: 09-29-14
As this story entered a more modern era, so did many unnecessary descriptions of sexual encounters. It didn't add much to the story line. It was interesting to learn from a different perspective the political machinations behind the actual historical events of the last 30 or so years. As much as I have liked the story lines of this series of three books, I am not enthralled with the author's writing ability. He overuses the literary device of questioning a character's motives and choices. The narrator doesn't help here by stating these questions as expository statements as opposed to the questions they are intended to represent. E.g. "what was he to do?" over and over and over stated as a sentence and not as an actual question.

Great for a road trip
Revisado: 06-28-13
My 19 year old daughter and I listened to this on a 1000 mile get-there-in-a-hurry road trip and loved it. The narrator does a great job and has an authentic accent (I know because I spent about 10 years in the south although I am not a native of that accent.)
On the way home, we had to drive till 1 am to get to a place with an open motel booking and hardly noticed our fatigue because it is such a good story even though told in the form of letters to various people.
