Fantastic book
Revisado: 02-13-23
This is a love story, but so much more. The characters deal with death, bullying, racism, abuse. But through it all, they keep hoping for lives that are bigger and better than their tiny dead-end town.

I can’t believe I stuck with it
Revisado: 05-10-22
Wow. I cannot tell you how many times I thought about dropping out of this book. The protagonist is such a narcissist. There is so little about her that is likable or redeemable. The narration is great. The story is not.

Historia
It's a case reminiscent of the explosive story of Susan Smith, convicted in the drownings of her two young sons in South Carolina. But in The Unforgiven, three young children are in the back seat of a car driven by Amanda Hamm's boyfriend as it slips into an Illinois lake. Amanda and her boyfriend survive. Her three children do not.

Was Justice Served?
Revisado: 05-24-19
I love true crime and this book did not disappoint. In fact, those who saw me listening while I walked through my town certainly heard me GASP on more than one occasion.
Innocent victims, shock that divided a small town, intrigue, the search for justice (and its possible miscarriage), racial tensions -- it's all here. The Unforgiven tells the story of Amanda Hamm and her three young children. One night Hamm's boyfriend, Maurice LaGrone Jr., drove the group to a lake near home. As the five got ready to depart, instead of putting the car in reverse, LaGrone drove the car into the lake, where the children drowned. Was it a horrible accident or premeditated murder???
Authors Edith Brady-Lunny and Steve Vogel are former journalists who sifted through countless interviews and trial transcripts to put together a vivid, but factual telling of Hamm's story. The narrative is captivating and the heartbreak is real.

Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter, Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons.

Another Winner from Celeste Ng
Revisado: 10-09-17
I enjoyed Ng's book Everything You Never Told Me, but I LOVED Little Fires Everywhere. Characters are flawed and layered. Conflicts are many -- and topical. Narration is a bit slow, but I just listened at a faster speed -- easy. I've recommended this book to everyone I know. A winner, for sure.

If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other. Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate.

Twisted Relationships Lead to Good Reading
Revisado: 08-15-17
Would you listen to Truly Madly Guilty again? Why?
Probably not because this is a story based on filling in the blanks ... and once you've done that, there's little reason to listen again.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked Vid and Tiffany. Their relationship was complicated and the weirdness they brought to every social situation they were in was entertaining. They made be squirm in my chair a little.
Which scene was your favorite?
When Erica overheard Clementine and Sam.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"Precious"
Any additional comments?
The narration was spot on but a little slow. I sped up the audio just a bit...

Small Town Complications Galore
Revisado: 08-15-17
If you could sum up The Good House in three words, what would they be?
Everybody.Has.Secrets.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the unexpected friendships/alliances that formed along the way.
Have you listened to any of Mary Beth Hurt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me think -- about people who are high functioning alcoholics. I didn't laugh or cry, but I found myself picking sides when different characters quarreled.
Any additional comments?
Good book. I'd definitely recommend.
