I feel so called out right now. I am totally just like Noah and would probably end up in the exact same situation, but sooner, because, let's face it, I'm on my phone WAY too much. This book had me going from being creeped out to exploding with laughter from one paragraph to the next. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one worrying (and making bad jokes) about the potential consequences of the world's growing addiction to screens. I definitely feel like all of the screen time and clickbait and algorithms are turning people into some weird form of radicalized zombies with no understanding of reality or objective truth, continuously regurgitating the same BS propaganda from our specially curated echo chambers. I'm certain that there is a terrifying future awaiting us due to the erosion of our critical thinking skills.

I don't have the words to describe this. And honestly, I wouldn't want to. You should go in blind with no expectations so your world can be as thoroughly rocked as mine was. This book is beautiful and haunting and heartbreaking, and I'm still not completely sure I understand what actually happened.

I loved this book. I've never really been a fan of westerns, but with the splatter westerns series, I'm gaining a new appreciation for the brutality of the old west. I have never cheered so loudly, or been so excited to see a character get their comeuppance before. But Robert Jack deserved every ounce of punishment that he received. And I loved every second of it.

This book was not what I was expecting, but in a good way. I was expecting a standard domestic thriller type of story, but this book goes WAY beyond that. It definitely gave me the ick being inside of Chandler's head, but that kind of ick is why I love reading horror. Well played, sir.

How is it that so many people love these giant felt monsters when they are so clearly terrifying? I've always disliked puppets, and I've gotten a lot of shit for it over the years. I'm glad to learn I'm not the only one who finds them frightening. And thanks, Ben, for taking that fear to a whole new level. I'm sure I won't miss sleeping.

There are few things more upsetting than being trapped during a storm, and Debra Castaneda tapped into those feelings perfectly. Add in some unexplained and spooky deaths just before the storm rolls in, and you've got a recipe for some serious dread.

If you thought Through The Eyes of Desperation: The Red Version tested your gag reflex, just wait until you read this version. The Black Version is so much worse. Or better? Depends what you're into, I guess. Of the two, I preferred this one, although both are quite good. I think I may have preferred this one because I found the characters a bit more sympathetic.

This was a fascinating concept. I've never enjoyed gambling, so I definitely can't imagine being so desperate as to be willing to gamble with my own flesh. The descriptions in this book are so well done that I felt certain I could even smell some of them. Only recommended for those with a strong stomach.

Even weirder than I expected

This book did not go where I expected it to, at all. The dangers of befriending a serial killer seem pretty obvious to me, even if he is serving a life sentence. It's clearly a bad idea, but we soon learn Lori has a LOT of bad ideas, such as following the aforementioned serial killer's directions into the wilderness on a clearly insane quest, and dragging her disabled sister along for the ride. But that's just the beginning as things quickly go from bad to worse and weird to weirder. If you think you know how this book will end, I promise you that you do not. It's definitely worth seeing it through, if you can stomach it.

I'm not even sure how to describe this book, aside from saying I loved it. Andrew Van Wey's unique style and epic weirdness really shine here. The way he weaves a modern story with cosmic horror full of elder gods speaks to me in a way not many authors can manage. I can't wait to see where the rest of this series goes!
