Historia
Beatrice Bird is plagued by ghosts. It’s a gift she’s had since she was a small child. Unfortunately, it’s a gift that has grown more intense, shifting from flashes and feelings to physical manifestations she can’t escape. In a desperate attempt for relief, Beatrice flees her home, her partner, and a psychology practice in San Francisco for a remote island with only nuns and a few cows for company. She sees as few people as she possibly can. She doesn’t call home. Then she meets Anne Iredale, a timid woman who has lost everything that matters to her.

Historia
Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

So much more about the history, culture, and education left out of the history books of our nation. Right there, alongside, and then elevated by this great book. I hope she decides to uncover more in other industries. I’m eager, and excited.

So scary!!
Revisado: 11-01-23
Always love how much Ann goes in depth to find out about everyone involved. Truly special. The reader was so slow. I normally speed it up 1.2x, but I had to speed it up even more to 1.4x just to get a normal speech pattern.

Historia
You are a failed novelist about to turn 50. A wedding invitation arrives in the mail: Your boyfriend of the past nine years is engaged to someone else. You can't say yes - it would be too awkward - and you can't say no - it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of invitations to half-baked literary events around the world. Question: How do you arrange to skip town? Answer: You accept them all.

For the last four decades, John Henry Browne has defended the indefensible. From Facebook folk hero the "Barefoot Bandit" Colton Moore, to Benjamin Ng of the Wah Mee massacre and Kandahar massacre culprit Sergeant Robert Bales, Browne's unceasing advocacy and the daring to take on some of the most unwinnable cases - and nearly win them all - has led 48 Hours' Peter Van Sant to call him "the most famous lawyer in America."

Captivating autobiography
Revisado: 07-08-23
I love this autobiography. He’s interesting, compassionate, and a bit of a thrill seeker. This is not a book about his clients. But of him and his experience and I love that. It was wonderful to hear how he grew up the way he did, live the life he lived, and cared about saving peoples lives, even when they didn’t deserve it.

Historia
In this fascinating account, Ann Rule delivers a tour de force: a whirlwind of misguided love, denial, guilt, and passions out of control; a series of brilliantly manipulated crimes; the bizarre and horrifying tale of two families brought to ruin; and, at the center of it all, the heartless, supremely selfish sociopath whose evil hid behind soft words and gentle manners, but who destroyed—without mercy—those who loved her.

My skin crawls at the re-enactments and conversations. Ann Rule does such a marvelous job at recreating the world/stories/characters. I listened straight through for 2 days just so I could never hear the crazed web of Pat Taylor ever again. Thanks, Ann. You are so good at what you do!

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Great story, and story telling. I had this for a while, and even tried to return it when I thought I’d never read it… but there was a reason why I needed to hear this. So glad I did, and genuinely empathetic to the natives and their people. This book has it all: lore, crime, social justice.
Thank you. Write more Mr. Dommek!

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

A story worth telling
Revisado: 10-21-21
I love science writers, and their ability to use their own experiences to better explain and transcribe multiple science topics into a circular story. Lulu told a very warm, and personal story of personal growth, and coupled it with an intellectual roadmap of findings that toppled heros, unearthing buried moral issues, and then finally making her way to a peaceful and hopeful present. I will recommend this to others, and probably listen again. Thank you, Lulu!

Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

The monotone voice was exactly as it should have been. The story was portrayed exactly as it should have been. Happy to know a lot about chess, and found it to be an exquisite delight. I was never bored, nor tired. This is binge-worthy.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 02-24-21
Very much a midlife crisis from a very privileged white woman. This speaks volumes to me as I am one too. It was uncomfortable to listen to because her problems were all in her head, and so are mine. The narrator was too chipper for me, and I would have had someone with some hook in her voice.
