Scholarly, Thorough, and Convincing

Dr. Evans bolsters his analysis of the steps leading from Germany's defeat in WWI to the creation of the Third Reich with lots and lots of statistics from original sources. That's not a bad thing - it gives weight to his assertions about the social, economic, and above all political conditions that put Germany in a unique position to accept and even embrace Hitler's National Socialist party and acquiesce to their power. While studiously undramatic, he makes clear why and how Germans who had lived for decades under a liberal democracy ended up rejecting its liberalism in favor of a brutal authoritarianism.

There are two more books in his series on the Third Reich, and I hope, once our own crisis of democracy is resolved and I'm no longer drawing uncomfortable parallels, to read those as well.

Alan Cumming is delightful... and of course there's his yummy accent! Fun, poignant, witty, dishy, and endearing, but never overbearing or heavy. Definitely recommend!

Interesting look at artists' process

the stories of the songs we're very interesting. Many assumptions about the lyrics, the stories behind the songs, the tall tales that make the rounds, are simply not true. It was a fascinating look at the artists' process.

The narration was okay, but left a little to be desired. I wanted a little less Casey Kasem and a little more rock fan enthusiasm. But maybe that's just me.

long, but worth it

the Jamaican patois can be difficult to follow at first but hang in there and you will get the ear for it. this is a long, long story, but for the most part well-told. I lost the thread a few times because it is so long, at the narrative jumps between characters and threads. overall, it was worth the time, and the ending did not disappoint.

if you're interested in the development of language you will find many interesting concepts here. The Narrative is laced with sometimes goofy humor, which is a bit of river relief from the sometimes technical description. Nevertheless very worthwhile and interesting throughout.

Unusual, Interesting, Fun

An engaging and unusual "detective" leverages his Aspergers Syndrome to good effect. The story was complex and interesting throughout. Looking forward to reading the next in the series!
