Historia
A seminal and controversial figure in the history of political thought and public relations, Edward Bernays pioneered the scientific technique of shaping and manipulating public opinion, which he famously dubbed the "engineering of consent". During World War I, he was an integral part of the US Committee on Public Information, or CPI, a powerful propaganda apparatus that was mobilized to package, advertise, and sell the war to the American people as one that would "Make the World Safe for Democracy".

The Bolsheviks promised that they were building a new society, a workers’ paradise that would change the nature of mankind itself. What they ended up constructing was the largest prison the world had ever seen: a Union of Soviet Socialist Republics that spanned half the globe.

Should be called The Rise and Fall of The USSR but still good
Revisado: 03-19-23
The White Pill part is the last 90 seconds. I still enjoyed it, despite the bad narration (lots of pacing issues) and learned a lot about Russian history.

Historia
Totalitarianism is not a coincidence and does not form in a vacuum. It arises from a collective psychosis that has followed a predictable script throughout history. In The Psychology of Totalitarianism, world-renowned Professor of Clinical Psychology Mattias Desmet deconstructs the societal conditions that allow this collective psychosis to take hold. By looking at our current situation and identifying the phenomenon of “mass formation”—a type of collective hypnosis—he clearly illustrates how close we are to surrendering to totalitarian regimes.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Enthralling story, voiced perfectly. Highly recommended
Revisado: 08-23-17
The narrator manages to be conversational yet still authoritative voicing of this wonderfully interesting and informative book. There was not a single moment during this book when my mind wandered. Instead, I was leaning in and engaged the entire time. Hard to do but Will Damron nailed it.
The author includes a post script about his research methodology, which I also found fascinating

I loved the author's first book, Sapiens, but think he has topped himself with this one. You will be smarter just for having listened to this terrific work! Few books raise as many interesting and relevant questions.

A terrible disservice has been done to and otherwise great book. I Contain Multitudes sounds like it is read by three different people... amateur hour stuff, totally unprofessional.

Historia
This pamphlet, first published in 1776, set in print the word every American was thinking about, but none dared say: independence! It was published anonymously in New York, selling 120,000 copies in the first 3 months and half a million in that same year. Its author, Thomas Paine, wrote in a language that could be understood by any reasonably literate colonist. But more important than it being so well received, is that it captured the American colonists' imaginations and was a primary catalyst to the independence movement in the United States. Noted American historian Bernard Bailyn called it "the most brilliant pamphlet written during the American Revolution, and one of the most brilliant ever written in the English language."

More of an epistemological study than a fiction
Revisado: 04-08-15
As usual Michael Chrichton is years ahead of the rest of us but don't expect a Hollywood blockbuster to be made out of this one. It will no doubt will make most people angry.
Read this only if you have an open mind and are not religiously attached to ideas/not an ideologue.

Historia
The story is about a two-dimensional world referred to as Flatland. All existence is limited to length and breadth in Flatland, its inhabitants unable even to imagine a third dimension. The amiable narrator, A Square, provides an overview of this fantastic world---its physics and metaphysics, its history, customs, and religious beliefs. But when a strange visitor mysteriously appears and transports the incredulous Flatlander to Spaceland, a land of three dimensions, his worldview is forever shattered.

Wonderful allegory about reality!
Revisado: 01-12-15
Great, short little book! The first half of it is repetitive and can be a bit tedious but once you make it to the main topic it all becomes worthwhile. If you let it, this book can expand your mind & expand your world in ways you would never have imagined. On the surface it is a silly little story but there are so many levels to it that it deserves to be listened to, mulled over and lived with for a while, then revisited for a second read.
Wonderful narration and production values as well.
Highly recommended for "deep thinkers".
