Historia
It is 2076: Lancer, Earth’s first starship, is on a mission to find interstellar civilizations. Although astronaut Nigel Walmsley’s experiences with alien encounters make him the expert, no one believes Nigel’s theory that machines are the dominant intelligent beings left in the galaxy and that their purpose is to annihilate all organic life. Then the explorers discover once-living planets where only machines remain – and ruined worlds where fugitive survivors must evade omnipresent and lethally advanced A.I. warships.

One of the Best series in sci fi
Revisado: 12-13-24
This is true, hard, science fiction.
The scope of the story in its entirety are mind bogglingly huge and thought provoking. Unimaginable alien life, self aware AI, light speed travel between the systems, etc.
All of this is interspersed with deep observations on the human experience interwoven through the characters depictions of events and feelings.
All of it almost poetic in its description.
These first two books set the stage for a truly galaxy spanning tale that any fan of thought provoking science fiction needs to experience.
It is funny to me to see the bad reviews from people whos main gripe are the topics of sexuality or the topic of sexual identity (which in all honestly is actually somewhat dated in its description) at some parts in the stories. The irony is palpable where in these very books this type of shallow stupid tendency to offense is constantly on display as a stumbling block to the greater good of the protagonist and the species in general.
The narration was great.
Do yourself a favor and read the whole series. If you are a true fan of hard science fiction and interested the deep questions that have plagued humanity since the beginning about our place in the universe, these novels are for you.

Here, Simmons returns to this richly imagined world of technological achievement, excitement, wonder and fear. Endymion is a story about love and memory, triumph and terror - an instant candidate for the field's highest honors.

great story
Revisado: 12-10-22
Always been a fan of sci Fi since age 11. Read the first book of the series in high schools and couldn't get into it, to my detriment.
I'm 40 now and this series has revealed itself for the masterpiece it is. Maybe it's maturity, maybe I was just dumb as hell in my teens, but inevitably, I have enjoyed the cantos series NOW immensely. Narrator was great as well.

After nearly four years, the zombie epidemic has almost burned itself out. Once a lone survivor on the brink of insanity, Gus Berry has a new life on a communal farm, his daily routine of policing the fields only rarely disrupted by straying undead. Gus’s drinking binges are over, and the dark days of Annapolis are soon to be a distant memory. But his troubles are far from over . . .

Historia
Thousands of years ago, Earth's terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life - but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity's great empire fell, and the program's decisions were lost to time. Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth. But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed. And it's been waiting for them.

Deep scientific and philosophical themes throughout. Mind expanding in its scope. I enjoyed both books immensely.
