Memorable characters. Some loose ends never explained. But you definitely want to hear the author’s note after the end of the narrative. Super interesting.

Over sexed, really light on an engaging plot, not one sympathetic character, not enough historical context to keep the reader curious, etc, etc. Just not worth another minute of my time.!!! I gave it a shot and then quit after 90 minutes. And I usually love Follett!

Incredibly Boring
Revisado: 01-29-25
W*ke! Ageist! Filled with stereotypes and frustratingly predictable. Finally decided the screed was an attempt by the author to cover all his PC bases. The last straw was reference to anyone over 40/50 as “Geries,” aka geriatrics who were characterized as arrogant and power hungry. If you’re a 20 or 30-year-old progressive who prefers their catastrophe narratives simple, pious, with little insight or nuance and with a little sci-fi thrown in here and there, this is probably the book for you. Kept thinking, “Why oh why is Ray Porter narrating this cr*p? He’s just way too good for this!”

Psychopaths and Narcissists
Revisado: 01-23-25
Boring and fairly one dimensional, stock characters. Spending with them ultimately felt burdensome. But the who-done-it compulsion kicked in and I slogged through to the end. Lacked nuance and/or any redemptive message. Also, woke (LGBTQ, etc.) in a band wagon-y way. If that’s your cup of tea it’ll be right up your alley.

The reader’s pronunciation of vowels
Revisado: 08-07-24
Just couldn’t make it through this utterly tedious and over-the-top book. It probably strikes some readers as beautiful and poetic. To me it was almost intolerable; pretentious, rambling, wordy, and … and in the end, a waste of my precious time. The performance? What is it with some British readers, especially the women? They love vowels so so so much, drawing them out until at various points during this interminable book I wanted to shout, “Stop! Stop right now!” [Listen to the word “hair,” or “their.”] But maybe it’s me. You decide!

Not a Thriller, More of a Romance
Revisado: 07-07-24
Incredibly irritating narrator! Barely tolerable. Maybe she primarily performs romance novels and her coyness flies there? At any rate, the story wasn't well served. Could someone better have redeemed this thriller/romance? It's a no! The novel was hackneyed and its execution formulaic. You know when you just know the author is going to cliff hang you. This author loves her cliff hangers. She uses them ad nauseam. As for the character, Alice, who is (I guess?) a heroine of the novel, she's a middle-aged, single mother of three children, each with a different father, who has been accused of neglect. Really?! The author expects the reader to toss this aside and relate? Kind of appalling because the suggestion is that you ignore this in favor of her eccentricity and vulnerability, both ruses. But, hold on, her best friend is - wait for it - a therapist! Ta dah. Alice has got someone to monitor her less than ideal choices. Yes, there's a very young, very beautiful, sexy Eastern European woman, again, a cardboard cut-out who despite being canny does not wake up until the 11th hour. She's just so in love! Yes, there's a psychopath but he doesn't advance the plot much. In fact, he's particularly one dimensional, i.e. uninteresting. The main main character is essentially an empty suit, a man with no memory and no past but who manages to have a libido and to fall in love in the space of 3 days. But I should stop. Perhaps you have a sense of whether or not you could stand it. I only continued listening because folding laundry doesn't require much of a diversion and psychopaths fascinate me.

In 1981, the year after Ted Turner founded CNN, a simple nun, using merely her entrepreneurial instincts and $200, launched what would become the world’s largest religious media empire in the garage of a Birmingham, Alabama, monastery. Under her guidance, the Eternal Word Television Network grew at a staggering pace, both in viewership and in influence, to where it now reaches over a hundred million viewers in hundreds of countries around the globe.

Inspiring and eminently approachable
Revisado: 05-14-24
Mother Angelica brought a wonderful personality, a profound resilience and unflinching commitment to the service of the Catholic faith and church. One of a kind, priceless, visionary…none of these superlatives go too far. See what you think. Listen to this inspiring book and see if you are not moved to praise for Angelica that echoes mine.

Ponderous
Revisado: 04-14-24
Slow moving and tedious. Made it to the end but not sure it’ll be worth continuing with the series. Characters are one dimensional, their motives questionable, and the plot isn’t particularly engaging probably because it takes so long to move along. Great premise, though. That’s what makes it difficult to abandon.
