Another Delightful Story Re: The Thurs Murder Club
Revisado: 04-07-25
Loved another in the series. The characters are so endearing, I’m hoping this series does not end any time soon. I suppose it could be possible for me to tire of this diverse gang of unlikely heroes, but I have not yet reached that point as of yet.

Could not finish. Didn’t enjoy story
Revisado: 02-01-25
This book, too me, was too plodding and utterly devoid of interesting characters. I just couldn’t keep on slogging though.

Historia
Mildred Lathbury is a clergyman's daughter and a mild-mannered spinster in 1950s England. She is one of those excellent women - the smart, supportive, repressed women whom men take for granted. As Mildred gets embroiled in the lives of her new neighbors - anthropologist Helena Napier; Helen's handsome, dashing husband, Rocky; and Julian Malory, the vicar next door - the novel presents a series of snapshots of human life as actually, and pluckily, lived.

Gentle read with wonderful humor
Revisado: 01-03-25
It took me by surprise, this book. I found it a little dull at first but found myself enjoying the humorous musings of the main character. The further I got into the story, the more I liked and enjoyed it.

And yet, sometimes it feels like she’s invisible. All of that changes when a book of fairy tales arrives on her doorstep. Inside, Martha finds a dedication written by her best friend—her grandmother Zelda—who died under mysterious circumstances years ago. When Martha discovers a clue within the book that her grandmother may still be alive, she becomes determined to discover the truth.

Loved The Library of Lost & Found
Revisado: 11-28-24
This is the first time I have read anything by Phaedra Patrick and I am looking forward to reading more of her titles. This book was great on so many levels: characters, plot, & meaning. It’s the whole package and was a gentle and somewhat-humorous read that covered themes of importance in our lives.

Historia
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”

Eloquent and thoughtful critique. Thank you, Dr. Moore. I will need to chew on this for a while. I am still wrestling with what I am called to do and say about the corruption in our churches and in our hearts. This is a heart-breaking time we are living in.

Historia
Philip Yancey, whose explorations of faith have made him a guide for millions, feels no need to defend the church. Yancey acknowledges that many spiritual seekers find few answers and little solace in the institutional church. How did Yancey manage to survive spiritually despite early encounters with a racist, legalistic church that he now views as almost cultic? In this, his most soul-searching book yet, he probes that very question.

So much to chew on. Yancey never disappoints!
Revisado: 01-07-23
Yancy always gives me so much to reflect on. This book is no different. I remember his name from when he was a columnist or writer for (I think) Campus Life magazine that was around in the 70s when I was a teen and a new believer. I came to trust his writer’s voice back then and am delighted that we both made it all the way to old age and we are both still devoted to our Lord, Christ. Thank you Philip for showing us the the people who have so profoundly shaped and guided your faith as you continue your struggle with Jacob’s God.

Not Wilkie’s Best Effort
Revisado: 12-20-21
Having loved the Moonstone and the Woman in White, I had high expectations for this story, but I thought the characters were flat and the plot and overall tone overly melodramatic. Also, the narrator should not have attempted to produce female voices. Sounded a little silly, I’m afraid

Good Performance & Interesting Plot
Revisado: 08-18-21
Thought I would try this author out. I enjoyed this book. I won't say it's great literature but the plot had some interesting elements. Further, it was interesting for the historical aspect. I'm not a big fan of romance novels in general, but this one was better than fluff.
