Lesser novel by a great writer
Revisado: 09-01-21
Reading excellent. First part of book dealing with Waterloo unforgettable. Remainder of book, court intrigues, love affairs by turns silly or tedious, often both . Not a patch on Stendhal's The Red and the Black. Still, glad to have heard this novel read well.

Historia
Under Western Eyes, Joseph Conrad's novel of political treachery and oppression, of betrayal, guilt, and intrigue, begins with a bomb that kills its intended target, a hated Russian minister of police, along with a number of innocent bystanders. A young student named Razumov hides the perpetrator, then betrays him and becomes a spy among his exiled comrades. He faces a moral dilemma from which there is no escape.

Marvelous novel, Decent reading
Revisado: 08-02-19
The story is one of Conrad's best; he hits the main theme, the East/West contrast, a bit relentlessly, but it doesn't matter. The book works like a well-oiled engine and is enthralling from tragic beginning to tragic end. You are wrung with pity for all the participants. Try listening to this as we did after hearing Dostoyevsky's The Demons/The Possessed/The Devils (different translations, same book). Conrad's politics are preferable, his book better crafted, even though individual scenes in the Dostoyevsky are as magnificent.

Historia
Here are 11 short stories and one novella by Anton Chekhov, one of the finest masters of what is acknowledged as a difficult genre. There is the richly comic "Oh! The Public" about a hassled ticket inspector, a wry look at morals and manners in "The Chorus Girl", and the melancholic tale of a cab driver in "Misery".

Title story, In the Ravine, a masterpiece
Revisado: 05-29-19
The title story is the only thing in this collection that pulls it to your attention. Too many of the other stories are early work, sketchy and undeveloped, a master learning his craft, and interesting only in that light, although the reader makes the most of them. But In the Ravine is one of Chekhov's greatest, grimmest, and most serenely cruel stories: a devastating and unforgettable piece.
