Historia
The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Baghdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs - the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness...their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth.

I'm not 100% sure I would have stuck with this if I were reading this rather than listening.
Enjoyed comparing the book to The 13th Warrior movie.

Historia
In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred more than 200 Texians who had been trapped in the Alamo. After 13 days of fighting, American legends Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett died there, along with other Americans who had moved to Texas looking for a fresh start. It was a crushing blow to Texas' fight for freedom. But the story doesn’t end there. The defeat galvanized the Texian settlers, and under General Sam Houston’s leadership, they rallied. Six weeks after the Alamo, Houston and his band of settlers defeated Santa Anna’s army in a shocking victory.

terrible sacrifice heroic gains
Revisado: 08-26-24
An easy read and tidy review of Texas history. A history of imperfect men and everyday men and women accomplishing amazing feats and surviving incredible hardships.
Not too impressed with Brian Kilmead's reading but it grew on me after awhile .

Historia
One of Hemingway's Nick Adams stories, two hitmen from Chicago arrive at a diner to await the arrival of Ole Anderson a former boxer who "messed up" in Chicago. Dressed like twins complete with sawed-off shotguns under their overcoats, they plan to execute Anderson when he comes into the diner for dinner.

Hmmm.
Revisado: 03-09-23
Narration was fine.
Story implies alot when it comes to the Swede, a sad and fatal character. I found the dialog between the Killers repetitive and a little boring but probably would have been unnerved by it if I were in the diner.
Not a big fan of Hemingway or Steinbeck but like to know for myself. Now I know.

Historia
By the time he was 30, Dr. Benjamin Rush had signed the Declaration of Independence, edited Common Sense, toured Europe as Benjamin Franklin’s protégé, and become John Adams’s confidant, and was soon to be appointed Washington’s surgeon general. And as with the greatest Revolutionary minds, Rush was only just beginning his role in 1776 in the American experiment.

I did not know that!
Revisado: 03-24-22
There were so many tidbits in this book I did not know. I am no scholar but have read much on Jefferson and Adams. I found Rush a pretty amazing person and was reminded again of the deep sacrifices our founding fathers and their families made. That they are so readily dismissed and scorned today proves what many have forgotten or never knew to begin with.
The narration was fine. I found some of the letters a little trying to get through, particularly the one describing dreams. The description of the care for the mentally ill shows how far we have come and Dr. Rush set us upon that path.

Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

A fascinating man and a complicated history
Revisado: 02-25-22
The story of Kit Carson awe inspiring. That one man could be so physically tough and so grounded in what he believed within himself was something I wish we could see more of today. It was grim by today's standards but unflinching.
I found some of the back stories behind some of the battles and situations a little long and overly detailed. However, Hampton Sides did not turn a blind eye to some horrific figures in our history. He fairly points out how complicated history can be and even good men and good intentions can fail.
The narration was great.
I learned much from this book and found it very, very interesting.

Worth the journey
Revisado: 12-30-21
This is a beautiful, sad ,inspiring and important book. The style of writing is a little overly descriptive and dated but it main objective is always clear.. The narration was very good and did not become tiresome.
