Historia
Everyone wants to escape their boring, stagnant lives full of inertia and regret. But so few people actually have the bravery to run - run away from everything and selflessly seek out personal fulfillment on the other side of the world where they don’t understand anything and won’t be expected to. The world is full of cowards. Tim Anderson was pushing 30 and working a string of dead-end jobs when he made the spontaneous decision to pack his bags and move to Japan.

Great novel, outstanding narrator
Revisado: 02-16-10
This is a special genre, and Hunter is a master of it. The environment is good versus evil, with a traditional hero who is an expert with firearms. The technical details are accurate and informative.
The narrator is superb, making the dialogue with a large number of characters understandable, and keeping the plot moving.

worthless and crude
Revisado: 04-11-06
The author used crude and foul language gratuitously. It did not support the story line, but reflected the shallowness of his life before and while in the service. There was no real attempt to analyze the bigger picture of the Marines or the war -- just his own pointless, sensuous existence. This book was a project while the author was at the Iowa Writers' workshop. How far it has fallen since the days of Flannery Oconnor.
