My New Addiction
Revisado: 02-23-25
I have become addicted to this series of well-written and well-performed stories, that seem to be excellently researched, relevant to current times (sadly,) yet are as undemanding and “easy” as any “beach or airplane read.” They have become my favorite walking companions and I am downloading them one after the other. It is much like a good TV series that one cannot help but binge watch.

Historia
A gorgeous, moving memoir of how one of America's most innovative and respected journalists found his voice by coming to terms with a painful past. New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow mines the compelling poetry of the out-of-time African-American Louisiana town where he grew up - a place where slavery's legacy was felt astonishingly close, reverberating in the elders' stories and in the near-constant wash of violence.

Charles Blow should leave narration to the professionals
Revisado: 07-23-22
I am a regular reader and fan of Charles Blow in the NYT. I greatly enjoy and admire his writing and this includes this memoir which helped me participate in innumerable experiences that I did not have in my own life. I can totally understand that he wanted to read his own memoir; I likely would have felt the same way - it makes sense, if the author is alive and willing. But, I am very sorry to say this, Charles is no actor and the monotonous tone of his voice was annoying and did not do justice to his great writing. I kept wishing that I was reading rather than listening to his story. I hung in there because I found it well-written and interesting. Please, please Mr. Blow, let a professional actor read your next recorded book.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Fantastically enjoyable!
Revisado: 07-23-22
I am so appreciative of Madeline Miller’s ability to make these ancient stories completely accessible and personally relevant to us in the 21st Century. She does this in a literary style that strikes the perfect balance between the poetry and elegance befitting the subject on the one hand, and accessibility and entertainment for those of us afraid of Virginia Wolf on the other. I am not very familiar with erotic literature, but I must say that to the degree that she ventures into that territory in this book, she manages to do this in a remarkably beautiful manner. I have to add that I loved listening to Frazer Douglas’s voice and masterful interpretations of character. I loved every minute of this piece.

Historia
The lives of millions will be changed after it breaks, and yet so few people understand it, or even realize it runs through their backyard. Dvorak reveals the San Andreas Fault's fascinating history - and its volatile future. It is a prominent geological feature that is almost impossible to see unless you know where to look. Hundreds of thousands of people drive across it every day. The San Andreas Fault is everywhere - and primed for a colossal quake. For decades scientists have warned that such a sudden shifting of the Earth's crust is inevitable.

Fascinating!
Revisado: 04-15-21
Written in a fluid, accessible story telling style, I found this book to be fascinating, especially for a Californian. It helped me better understand the shifting earth upon which I have lived most of my life. I am thinking, however, that having listened to it, I now want to buy it in hard copy form so that I can re-read the descriptions when I travel to the specific locations described.
