Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Excellent. Long but so rich and complex

Paradigm altering. Really influenced how I think about western history and thought. Would recommend to anyone if they can get through all the length of the course.

Historia
Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.

Entertaining narrative style with grand insights
Revisado: 05-12-15
Big picture perspective of Islamic thought, culture, (and yes) history told by narrator who does a great job of referencing Western historical and cultural landmarks to keep the reader engaged.
Completely reframed how I think about the Islamic world and current events thereof.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Fascinating human story, unique political insight
Revisado: 01-16-13
What did you love best about The Poisonwood Bible?
combination of a well-told story of the protagonist family coupled with a unique look at the politics of 1960s Congo. Also thought provoking in its perspective on cultural and theological differences between American and African societies.
