Historia
Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Great story, great narration
Revisado: 01-03-24
I was concerned by the many reviewers who mentioned problems with the narration, but as a fan of Steven Brand, I gave this a try anyway. So glad I did! I found the narration clear and comprehensible, and had no trouble following who was speaking. Cracking good story, great pacing, outstanding narration. Looking forward to catching up on this series.

Strong characterizations, great narration
Revisado: 12-13-22
First two thirds of this character-focused fantasy are well done and engaging. As other reviewers have noted, the plot revolves around the development of the relationship between the main characters, with a secondary ‘mystery.’ World building is strong—plot, not so much. The last third of the book requires the reader to suspend belief, buying into the idea that the heir to the throne is the only person in the palace who could possibly investigate a counterfeiting operation. This scenario places the heir in several unnecessarily dangerous situations—a bit silly, but the good writing, flashes of humor, and likable leads make up for the shortcomings. Fantastic narration by Casey Jones.

Strong storytelling
Revisado: 06-12-19
I seem to be in the minority opinion here, but I really enjoyed this fantasy adventure novella. The story begins with the "white guys stuck in the ice" trope of arctic maritime literature (think Karluk), but reverses gender roles. Most of the plot involves characters fighting for their lives and is told in the first person by the (former) ship captain.
Once I finished the novella, I looked for other works by the same author, but apparently nothing set in the Black Crow world has been published yet. Too bad, as I'd give a full-length fantasy by Livingston a try.

Historia
Gideon Frayne has spent his whole working life as a policeman in the village of Dark on Bodmin Moor. His first missing-child case is eating him alive. When his own boss sends in a psychic to help with the case, he's gutted - he's a level-headed copper who doesn't believe in such things, and he can't help but think that the arrival of clairvoyant Lee Tyack is a comment on his failure to find the little girl. But Lee is hard to hate, no matter how Gideon tries. At first Lee's insights into the case make no sense, but he seems to have a window straight into Gideon's heart.

Great story with excellent narration
Revisado: 08-03-18
This is an atmospheric m/m mystery novella with excellent narration by Tim Gilbert. I bought it on a whim--it was an audible daily deal and I previously enjoyed another novella by Harper Fox. In this case, the audio truly enhances the story, which is what happens when the narration is a perfect fit for the character and setting. Gilbert reads Gideon Frayne with a gravelly voice that really conveys the character of the gruff, rough-around-the-edges Cornish policeman. The lighter touch with psychic Lee Tyack is just as well done, creating a strong vocal contrast between the two men. (If you haven't figured it out yet, there's a male-male romance here, including a fairly explicit sex scene.)
The framing plot--the disappearance of a young girl--is the primary focus of the narrative, and it's very well paced. I could easily have listened to the entire 3 hours in a single sitting. Bodmin Moor is much more than just the setting in this story--almost a character itself, with its autumn colors and rocky crags.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book is the first in a series, and I suspect I''ll be choosing the audio over kindle again, despite the hefty price difference.

Any additional comments?
Fast-paced mystery / thriller that drops a washed-up detective and the hapless XO of an ice freighter in the middle of an interplanetary catastophe. Great characters and spot on narration by Jefferson Mays. Highly recommended if you like the character-driven action of McMaster Bujold or the political complexities of Weber's Honor Harrington series.
