Historia
The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Wonderful bits of factoids and information woven together into a grand story of metazoan sensations
Revisado: 04-12-25
Ed Yong is a compelling writer and even though I found some bits a little tedious (just my lack of ecological expertise) I thought this was a v nice window into animal senses, their evolution, and how small conservatory changes can go a long way into safeguarding ecosystems. A fun and informative read!

Historia
Fascinated from an early age by the natural world in general and ants in particular, Edward Osborne Wilson's field work on them and on all social insects has vastly expanded our knowledge of their many species and fascinating ways of being. This work led to his 1975 book Sociobiology, which created an intellectual firestorm from his contention that all animal behavior, including that of humans, is governed by the laws of evolution and genetics. Subsequently, Wilson has become a leading voice on the crucial importance to all life of biodiversity.

A phenomenal story of science and the humans who take part in it…
Revisado: 02-24-25
…centered around ecology, evolutionary biology, sociobiology, and the structural foundations that EO Wilson provided these disciplines. Rhodes is brilliant and there were some surprising facts in here. I don’t agree with EO Wilson or Rhodes’ defense of some of his values, but nonetheless, this was a delightful listen. Good voice performance(s) as well.

A clear and concise instruction manual for better productivity
Revisado: 01-29-24
I liked this book—I went into it without many expectations and without knowing too much about Ali Abdaal (I had maybe seen a handful of his videos before). I had heard (and seen from some of his clickbait-baitey YouTube titles) that he had a propensity to be overly committed to numbers, discipline, and the “reactive” (as opposed to proactive or let alone “feel good”) aspects of productivity. That said, the book is an excellent primer on how to get going towards a more productive (but not toxic) pathway. The book addresses how discipline by itself or what I call the “apparent” statistics of productivity can cause burnout. Abdaal strikes a good balance between prescription of tactics/strategy/tools and focusing on content allowing readers to be flexible enough to find their own well-suited form of productivity. I think this will be a great read for those new to this type of literature. A small detraction for me was that I had heard or was familiar with a few to many examples given in this book and I removed one star for encountering examples (even good ones) that seemed rehashed to me from other sources.

For the first time, in Fifth Sun, the history of the Aztecs is offered in all its complexity based solely on the texts written by the indigenous people themselves. Camilla Townsend presents an accessible and humanized depiction of these native Mexicans, rather than seeing them as the exotic, bloody figures of European stereotypes.

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

I was very taken by some of the insights in this book. This is a really refreshing and inspiring perspective, even though the essence of what Rubin weaves into a full-blown treatise on musical (and other) creativity is rooted in Buddhism and other eastern philosophies.

The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

This was an excellent listen overall. -2 stars for eg performance because the “Indian-leaning” narrator for the Indian words, was absolutely awful. His pronunciation was alien and he clearly did not know these words. I thought Audible could’ve easily done better finding someone who actually knew what they were talking about.

Doomed to Fail explores the heaviest music the world has ever heard, tracing doom, sludge, and post-metal as their own distinct (and incredibly loud) traditions. Anselmi covers the bands and musicians that have impacted those styles most - Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Melvins, Eyehategod, Godflesh, Neurosis, Saint Vitus, and many others - while diving into the cultural doom that has spawned such music, from the bombing of Birmingham and hurricane devastation of New Orleans to glaring economic inequality, industrial alienation, climate change, and widespread addiction.

Revisado: 06-22-22
This was a great listen! As an ardent doom/sludge fan, I really appreciated the way this was written - honest, informative, and eloquent. Anselmi's take on the history of doom metal is refreshing and entertaining - that coming from someone who is familiar with the genre. He presents a convincing evolutionary phylogeny of all that is heavy and serves as a wise and helpful tour guide for the journey. Readers of heavy metal literature - this one is a must! I must also add that the performer for the audiobook is great, too!

In a field of PhDs, Tim Samaras didn’t attend a day of college in his life. He chased storms with brilliant tools of his own invention and pushed closer to the tornado than anyone else ever dared. When he achieved what meteorologists had deemed impossible, it was as if he had snatched the fire of the gods. Yet even as he transformed the field, Samaras kept on pushing.
