Historia
Crime author Dick Markham is in love again; his fiancée, Lesley Grant, the mysterious newcomer to the village. When Grant accidentally shoots a fortune teller through the side of his tent at the local fair - following a very strange reaction to his predictions - Markham is reluctantly brought into a scheme to expose his betrothed as a suspected serial husband-poisoner. That night the enigmatic fortune teller - and chief accuser - is found dead in an impossible locked-room setup, casting suspicion onto Grant and striking doubt into the heart of her lover.

John Dickson Carr is a brilliant descriptive clever writer
Revisado: 01-24-23
I have such a difficult time finding a good writer now
I am so often disappointed
After having listened to the greatest of the golden age writers like Agatha Christie
Margery Allingham, Dorothy L Sayers,
Geogette Heyer (the funniest)
I am drawn in the story by his description of the characters and atmosphere
He has a gift
His us of the adjectives and adverbs to bring a story to life are superbly admirable
I can see Dr Gideon Fell with all of his bulk and wagging chins
What a great character
His plots are genius
And keep you guessing all along
Twisting and turning
I was a delicious privilege to be treated to such an adventure
The narrator is not the best but it doesn’t diminish the superlative nature of this work

There is, in fact, no shortage of people who wanted him dead.

The valleys of the human soul
Revisado: 11-10-21
Beautifully described intricate nuances of unrequited love, desperation ,human frailty and loss
If not for the penetrating and profound depth in explaining the suspense and atmosphere of loss upon loss the story would be a detour into a world of depression
Don’t take that road if you need to enter into a world with a satisfying respite from the ugliness of life

Historia
The superlatively analytical Inspector Hemingway is confronted by a murder that seems impossible – no one was near the murder weapon at the time the shot was fired. Everyone on the scene seems to have a motive, not to mention the wherewithal to commit murder, and alibis that simply don't hold up.

Brilliant
I only wish she had written more mysteries!
I especially love the humor in her stories
She is actually right up there with Agatha Christie
I so often hear that when searching for a mystery and it is never true but in this case it is true

Agatha Christie is incomparable
Revisado: 06-08-21
There is no one that ever quite reaches her level again and again each mystery writer is compared to her and so very few can come close to her genius
