How is this possible?
Revisado: 03-15-24
I served on jury duty. The plaintiff was a man with a family—kids and wife. It was a serious but nonviolent crime. The judge, at deliberation instructions, specifically said not to consider his family situation when determining guilt and punishment. This was reiterated several times. Not to consider he would loose his career, his wife was going to divorce him and he had young children. We were only to focus on his behavior. We found him guilty and gave him 8 years out of a possible 10 years. Sentences should be related to guilt and degree of crime. I was shocked at how this judge put so much emphasis on a confessed criminals life situation and gave her so much favor. It blew my mind! I guess it’s good I live in a state where juries determine jail time instead of judges.

Not my favorite Olsen book
Revisado: 01-13-24
I read all Olsen’s books. This one is the first one that I only halfway enjoyed. I kept waiting for it to get better but it still remained “meh” to me. I’ll still read all his books. If you’re new to reading his work don’t start with this one. He’s a really great author but to me, this one doesn’t showcase his full talent.

Slow start. Trigger Warning. Worth it.
Revisado: 12-29-23
Starts a little slow but is worth sticking through. It covers several types of trauma without graphic descriptions. If you have a history of trauma you may want to pass; however, you also might find it therapeutic and helpful.

Great Story
Revisado: 12-08-23
I lived in that area for many years and I found the story very realistic to what living in a small bush community truly is. There are many folklores and the author did a good job of bringing one to life and in a modern plausible sense. A very enjoyable read!

Don’t give up!
Revisado: 10-21-23
The first time listening to the book I lost interest about a third of the way in and stopped. But I have really enjoyed all of Roberts Crime books and I had already gotten book two. So, I skipped to it and was immediately hooked. After I finished it I went back and gave the first one another try. It’s not my favorite of his books but it’s worth finishing. I will definitely keep reading his crime novels!

Historia
Cassie McDowell’s life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed - violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who’s responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface.

Was there a point to this story?
Revisado: 04-14-20
. While the author shows talent, I’m still trying to figure out what point of the story. It’s more of a bunch of subplots crammed together through the eyes of a junior high girl. The promotional summary very misleading. Yes, boys are being abused in a town but again, that’s more of a side line and vaguely covered sub-plot. Yes, it’s discussed in the book but it never goes much deeper than “boys are being abused” and to identify a few victims and eventually the perpetrator. There’s no tension or suspense. It takes place in the 1980s but there are few chronological errors. There’s nothing unique about the story. A dad with PTSD, an unhappy wife, inappropriate sexual behavior, a cop that deals drugs, and a poverty stricken community full of confused teenagers. It’s all very trite; a literary scenario used for years. It’s shallow and has very thin character development. If you have free time to waste and no other book available then this wouldn’t be an unbearable read. Overall, it’s slow, unimaginative and full of holes.

Couldn’t stop listening, hope it’s a series!
Revisado: 02-03-19
For an avid reader and listener, plots and characters can become trite. Same plot and players in different wrapping, so to speak. This was fresh and new. A few hesitant predictions points, but otherwise different from other books in this genre. Looking forward to more.

Descriptive, but depressing. Nonfiction a better suit?
Revisado: 06-28-17
Like many WW2 stories, it is a series of heartbreaking and depressive events. I had to read it in phases, and I am not a soft tender-heart. It is very long, but covers a short chronological time frame. The author states he took some creative liberties, he should have created more scenes less intense and jovial to breakup the nonstop aggression of the story. This publishing as historical nonfiction, making these liberties acceptable.
Centering on WW2 events in Italy, a place often overshadowed by stories from Poland , France, and Germany, it offers realistic insight on the suffering and challenge's Italians endured. However, as a fictional piece based on true events it remains incredibly intense, sad, "heavy" and even drepressing. This would fit better with a nonfiction book.
It is a fair read but prepare for reporting with entertainment slipped in every now and then.

Wrong narrator
Revisado: 04-13-17
They ruined the story with this narrator. It was flat and characterless. Emotionless. Boring. It had no depth.
He is best suited to reading scripture and offering prayer on Sunday morning.

Historia
Eighteen-year-old Alice is unhappy. Her boyfriend is nice and polite, but he's also quick and careless in bed, and doesn't give Alice the attention and variety she craves. But he's not entirely to blame, because Alice herself doesn't understand her own needs. She's heard about what sex is supposed to be like, but has never felt anything remotely close to what she's read about in runaway bestselling books.

Fun parity on a classic!
Revisado: 09-22-16
Witty and quirky, this is an entertaining parity on the classic books. Definitely for the adult reader and definitely NOT to be taken seriously!
If you're looking for a traditional romance this is not for you. if your looking for something fun and short this is perfect. Its sort of like a SNL skit with a kinky twist!
