Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Told from the Japanese perspective, The Rising Sun is, in the author’s words, "a factual saga of people caught up in the flood of the most overwhelming war of mankind, told as it happened - muddled, ennobling, disgraceful, frustrating, full of paradox."

Increased my understanding of WWII in the Pacific
Revisado: 06-26-24
This book provides extensive context for the lead-up to the Pacific war and details of each stage of the war. It's largely from the Japanese side, which gives new perspective to the US reader, but it was objective with respect to issues on both sides. It seems very well researched- lots of detail and some patience required to stick with it, but I found it to be worth the effort. I did find the first section about the Japanese military in the 20s and 30s a bit hard to follow. Probably this was due to the plethora of Japanese names unfamiliar to the western listener - maybe that part would have been easier on the written page.
The saddest part of this story was all of the tragic miscommunication, missed communication and political posturing that resulted in such horrific bloodshed. So many missed opportunities for it to end differently.

Historia
Before Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, and Doonesbury, there was Art Buchwald. For more than fifty years, from 1949 to 2006, Art Buchwald’s Pulitzer Prize-winning column of political satire and biting wit made him one of the most widely read American humorists and a popular player in the Washington world of Ethel and Ted Kennedy, Ben Bradlee, and Katharine Graham. Dean Acheson, former U.S. Secretary of State, called Buchwald the “greatest satirist in the English language since Pope and Swift.”

Entertaining nostalgia
Revisado: 08-13-22
In these extremely polarized times it's nice to be reminded that political commentary does not have to be vicious or nasty to make a point. Politicians on both sides would do well to take themselves a little less seriously. Though Buchwald's political leanings were clear, at least he was able to reject the expectation to keep the gloves on for those on his political side.

Historia
John Lithgow has compiled an outstanding collection of memorable poems and has gathered his famous friends to read them. The wide variety of carefully selected poetry in this audiobook provides the perfect introduction to reel in those who are new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. Lithgow offers insightful and sometimes poignant commentary to accompany each poem. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud".

A wonderful listen!
Revisado: 11-07-21
John Lithgow's love of poetry comes through in each passage and stimulated me to go back and read more poetry than I had in many years. Beautifully read and wonderful selections.

Historia
At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

Lots of human insight, but hard to relate to the title character
Revisado: 03-14-20
This book is beautifully descriptive and has a lot of humanity, but I struggled with the main character’s complete lack of self-awareness. Also, in a few instances she shows great sympathy and insight into others, but mostly she’s lacking in empathy to the point of meanness. This seemed contradictory and maybe people can be like that but I found it a stretch. Only at the very end of the last story does she seem to have a glimmer of understanding.
