The American standard system of measurement is a unique and odd thing to behold with its esoteric, inconsistent standards: 12 inches in a foot, three feet in a yard, 16 ounces in a pound, 100 pennies to the dollar. For something as elemental as counting and estimating the world around us, it seems like a confusing tool to use. So how did we end up with it? Most of the rest of the world is on the metric system, and for a time in the 1970s America appeared ready to make the switch.

Superb book about the history of measurement and the pros and cons of various units. The parts about monetary units theoughout history and their relationship to measurement of weight, distance and volume adds an interesting perspective.

There are a handful of good stories here. There rest share one, more, or all of the following characteristics: tedious, incomprehensible, and abrupt or unsatisfying endings that resolve nothing. Excellent narration though. A waste of a credit.

Don't let the fool who gave it one star because he couldn't figure out that the Swedish title meant the book is in Swedish make you think this book sucks. If you don't understand Swedish, get the English version. If you accidentally buy the Swedish version, Audible will gladly refund your credit so you can buy the translated version. If, like me, you understand Swedish as a second language, you will love the opportunity to listen to the book in it's original language and improve your Swedish while enjoying a well-read, excellent audiobook. I'm very glad that I can buy audiobooks in Swedish at Audible USA, and have bought and enjoyed several so far.

The Voice is NOT a Problem

I held off on buying this book for months because of the one-star rating by the listener who could not stand the author's voice. Well, I wish I hadn't waited. Sure, the guy's voice is a bit geeky, but few of us have a voice like James Earl Jones and others. Having the author read the book lends authenticity. I had no problems with it and found the book fascinating. It the subject matter interests you, do not hesitate. You will enjoy this book.
