Great Listen!
Revisado: 08-30-23
I really enjoyed this book! We are going to Romania for a month, and I was more nervous than excited. But this book was fantastic in describing all the great variety of things to do in Bucharest, and naming specific places to go. The author obviously has a great love for Bucharest, and the narrator conveys it to readers so infectiously!
To be honest I ordered the paper copy of this book as well, because I was so excited by the author’s recommendations, but knew I couldn’t possibly remember them or write them down in Romanian. Nevertheless I feel the audiobook served an important purpose in increasing my enthusiasm for our trip. Before listening to this book, I already had access to a lot of information on Romania, but was not interested enough to read it!
I have filled in our itinerary quite a bit with the author’s recommendations, and can’t wait to try it all out!

Historia
In 1954, 63-year-old Maine farmer Annie Wilkins embarked on an impossible journey. She had no money and no family, she had just lost her farm, and her doctor had given her only two years to live. But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow.

Captivating!
Revisado: 08-15-22
One of the most captivating books I have ever read! Annie Wilkins did not possess good looks, good health, education or money – i.e. typical markers of success – yet she set out on this bold journey. She did possess trust and a love of people, and made friends wherever she went. I was amazed to read of this time, when automobiles had mostly taken over, but the interstate highway system had only started to be built, and there were still many houses with a stable or corral attached. Annie was not shy about riding up to a house and asking if she could stable her horse and camp there. Often people invited her to sleep in the house, or police would let her sleep in the jail, which apparently was common for travelers of limited means. Annie also captured the imagination of many reporters, who wrote about her journey, and the whole country, who read about her in their local papers. Truly an inspiring woman, who overcame so many obstacles to complete her journey, and a riveting book, for lovers of animals and people!

Unforgettable!
Revisado: 05-04-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Something to Prove: A Daughter’s Journey to Fulfill a Father’s Legacy to be better than the print version?
Yes, it was easy to listen to, and I enjoyed hearing the author narrate it.
What other book might you compare Something to Prove: A Daughter’s Journey to Fulfill a Father’s Legacy to and why?
Maybe her first book, "Ditchdigger's Daughters."
Which character – as performed by Yvonne S. Thornton – was your favorite?
Herself!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
An Unforgettable Personal and Medical Journey
Any additional comments?
I can hardly believe I’m saying this, but this book was as good as "Ditchdigger’s Daughters," one of my favorite books of all times! Because even after Yvonne Thornton became an OB-GYN, it wasn’t as if her problems stopped. This book describes how her tireless work ethic, sterling character, additional certifications and teaching experience, which made her head and shoulders more qualified than most other OB-GYNs, did not stop the discrimination she faced as a black woman MD. A lot of the book was surprising and infuriating, and thank god Yvonne had such a fulfilling personal life with her husband and children. But the ingenious ways she either dealt with or put up with the many challenges in her life will continue to instruct and inspire me for the rest of my life. Plus the medical cases described in the book – even though I am not normally interested in such things – are fascinating. Simply an unforgettable read, or better yet, listen!

Charming Listen!
Revisado: 10-14-15
What made the experience of listening to The Gift of Adversity the most enjoyable?
I found this book absolutely charming. It was not what I expected, with “Adversity” so prominent in the title. Each of the stories did contain hardship, but the reminisces had an entertaining, “can’t stop listening” quality that predominated. Then at the end of each story the learning was reflected on.
What did you like best about this story?
All in all, a very comforting and uplifting book!
What about Erik Synnestvedt’s performance did you like?
Narrator did a fine job!
If you could give The Gift of Adversity a new subtitle, what would it be?
Growing up in post-holocaust South Africa
