Although a clever work of fantasy, Lawhead has created a sympathetic cast of characters (with the mecessary villain or two) entwined in a grand adventure across time and space, through which he explores fundamental questions about life, its purposes, and the hand of God. The narrator skills brings it all to life.

Well-told story that’s true to the history

Well-developed story and secondary characters in the orbit of the historically dominant ones make this an enjoyable retelling of the history. A quibble: the use of a lot of archaic (Early Modern English?) language seems a bit tendentious given the fact that most of the conversations would have been in Norman French and any English conversations would have been in a much older form of the language.

Told through eyes of a young teenager, as recalled by his grown self, the story authentically captures the quick certainties and sometimes unresolved doubts that surround growing up. The author paints a believable picture of small-town America before the turbulence of the Sixties. A very engrossing and satisfying novel!

The book is filled with great characters—mostly ordinary folk who become larger than life. The narration is superb. This book deserves much more attention than it has received (at last in the U.S.)

The place, which is the main character of this centuries-long saga, comes alive through the unfinished stories of its successive inhabitants. The writing is at once lyrical, thoughtful, and even at times laugh-out-loud humorous. A great read/listen throughout—despite the fact that the languorous correspondence between the artist and the poet seemed to drag on a bit too long.

This final book of the trilogy winds up (mostly) the saga with fate taking center stage in the lives and deaths of characters whom, due to Hartsuyker’s gripping writing, you can’t help but care about. A great read/listen

An engaging story of love, loyalty and intrigue set against sea battles of Viking raiders and warring kings for the control of Norway. Heroes (and heroine), villains, and some of the more ambiguous characters are well-developed. Can hardly wait to start book 3 of this trilogy.

I will listen to the rest of the trilogy, because I hope that the story will be fully developed and resolved. This book ends abruptly and without a real resolution of any of the threads of the story so far. The performance was OK, but the delivery of many conversations seems out of sync with the characters and the context of the discussion.

Unlike what the rather tendentious title of this might suggest, this is very accessible overview of the philosophical themes behind “The American Dream.” Moores book reads like a very good group biography of a selected thinkers, writers, and activists, all with roots in and ties to Britain, and particularly Benjamin Franklin. The narration was exceptionally good at making conversations come alive and the capturing the tone of written materials. So glad I picked this up and I highly recommend it.

The attention to the background of the athletes, and particularly Joe Rantz, rounds out a great athletic story.
