Historia
Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life, even while he feels himself incapable of understanding human beings. Oba Yozo's attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a "clown" to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult. Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness.

Another Book for Existentialists
Revisado: 03-21-22
If you're able to tolerate the sometimes heavy-handed misogyny of this character(which is hopefully intentional), this a great book to add to your collection on existentialism. Like some other reviews on here I would compare it most to Camu's work in, "The Stranger" -maybe a dash of Jean Paul Sartre's, "Nausea" and there are some Kafka-isms. I only took off one star because I found the main character to be just so off-putting; I believe this is intentional on the part of the writer but it did make it hard to care about his story at times. On a more positive note I think Dazai does well describing the essence of human tribulations and the more dissapointing aspects of our lives. The story is also very well written and the narrator was decent for this sort of story. Not my favorite novel but I dont regret listening.

If Divergent and Harry Potter Had a Baby
Revisado: 03-14-22
...not in a good way though. I usually love dark academia-style books so I thought I would love this when it was recommended to be with those themes. For me it missed the mark. It's extremely YA in the worst sort of way. Each character's chapter feels like the author is trying to prove exactly how smart they are rather than demonstrating and letting the reader come to understand that intelligence. Each of the characters are also so self-obsessed and lacked awareness in a lot of ways so they came off immature teenagers. Maybe all that was intentional but it just wasn't for me. Also if you were recommended this book from academia tiktok, I would pass.

A bit slow for me but I enjoyed listening to the comparisons. It gave me insight into a perspective I hadn't previously thought of which is always a win in my book.

Historia
Troy has fallen and the victorious Greeks are eager to return home with the spoils of an endless war—including the women of Troy themselves. They await a fair wind for the Aegean. It does not come, because the gods are offended. The body of King Priam lies unburied and desecrated, and so the victors remain in suspension, camped in the shadows of the city they destroyed as the coalition that held them together begins to unravel. Old feuds resurface and new suspicions and rivalries begin to fester.

Enjoyable Read if You Need to Escape for Awhile
Revisado: 03-03-22
Although I enjoyed the first book a little more, this story builds upon a lot of the same themes that enticed me in Silence of the Girls so nothing felt especially new just more of what I enjoyed before which is fine. It was nice to see the protagonist grow into a slightly different role, that of the mother, as she gained more power rather than the continued helplessness of the first book. If you've read the first I recommend reading this book as well since it closes her story well though I think the first book could stand on its own too.

Pretty Straightforward Vampire Novel
Revisado: 02-10-22
The story was a relatively straightforward one, an easy read/listen if you just want to distract yourself for awhile without any deep philosophical inquiries. There are some sex scenes but they're very tame.

Though the book can dwell in a few areas, it is overall a pleasant listen that doesn't feel too textbook-esque but still offers a ton of information.
